Removing Hydraulic Hoses

Hello All,
I need to replace two hoses on the loader for my
ih 454 on the control with the levers.
Is there anything i need to do prior to removing the hoses and fittings.
I will need to do some cleaning first but do you just take them loose , will i loose a lot of fluid if there is no pressure or just what is in the hose? I never ventured into this territory before just thought i would get some good insight before doing this job.
Thanks
Harry

I'm not 100% familiar with a 454, but I think what you need to do, before removing any hoses, is to shut off the engine and then lower the loader all the way to the ground, and then work all the hydraulic levers in both directions a few times each. This SHOULD relieve any pressure in the hoses and in the valves. You might still lose a bit of hydraulic fluid, but the loss will be minimal.

Dis-connecting hydraulic hoses with pressure on them will not only give you an unwanted bath in oil, but can be down right dangerous as well because that oil, under pressure, can penetrate skin and could possibly take out an eye. Be careful.

Do as Rusty suggested and you should be good to go. Your local hydraulic store can probably make you new hoses if you take them along with you. Our local auto parts store can make new ones. We also have a place called Colliflower and they will make them while you wait. Hal
