Narrowing a 7488 front Axle

Need to narrow the axle on my 2 wheel drive pulling truck to fit wider tires and drop some weight. The axle I use is a 7488 front axle. I was wondering where i should take a section from. I would like to take about 12 " out. I know I need to keep the outside bearing. Any thoughts would really help. Thanks Jesse

Won't you have to keep the pumpkin in the center?

Which would require a section out of both sides?

The section will have to come from between the outside bearing and the pumpkin, obviously. If total width is 12", then 6" from each side.

The best place to remove material will be where the shape and size of the axle tube is consistent. This will make it easiest to match up and weld back together. On a steel tube axle like you'd find under a pickup truck, it's pretty simple, but with a cast axle that may be a problem.

Another thought after mkirsh's response.

I would leave the axle alone and change the offset on the rims. Put more tire over or around the axle.

You won't lose any weight but will save a lot of grief trying to reweld that cast.
