Starter Solenoid on 12 Volt Conversion

In the process of having the 350U converted to 12 volts. I know the starter will handle 12 volts fine, but is the solenoid ok too or do I need to go to a 12 volt? I was thinking it was ok, but the shop working on it put a universal 12 volt solenoid on it.
THanks

There are 6 volt and 12 volt solenoids. Just make sure the one you are using is for a 12 volt system.

Solenoids are used for several applications from lawn mowers to big diesels. It is hard to tell the capacity of aftermarket ones because they display no ratings. I have found over the years that the ones with 3/8in connections will work fine on 4cyl IH's.For instance the aftermarket one for a Ford tractor has 5/16 terminals

Here's the one I used I used on my garden tractor. It's for a Ford too. The one on my old Mercury Cougar has one similar. Hal

If the shop put a 12 volt solenoid on it Id sure leave it. If the old one was for 6 volts it likely could have lasted a long time if 12 volts was used instead, SUBJECT TO how long its held engaged (how fast tractor starts) and obviously how often it gets used AND ITS RATING. It depends on the current rating of the solenoid and its heat dissipation capacity (its power rating), they are more of a current and magnetic field device then any precise voltage sensitive unit.

I wouldnt envision anyyyyyy problem pulling the solenoid in so its simply a matter of its current and heat dissipationrating if used at 12 versus 6 volts. My guess (absent any of its specs and ratings mind you) is it would have been okay.

Happy New Year

Yup, thats similar to the universal one they used. Its ok, but I sure liked the stock one that was small and close to the starter. Less change of branches and what not tearing it off...
THanks for the info.
