1066 Standard Wide Front End Overhaul

I got all of the steering cylinder and center pivot support part out from under it and have all new bushings in and ready to go back together. Was cleaning all the old grease and dirt from the area where center pivot bracket pins to axle and found that bushing on the axle pivot pin looks like it has worked backwards. I knew the axle was a little loose in this area but now I know I am going to have to replace the pivot pin, bushing and probably stay rod ball/socket. Do you all think it will be easier to just pull the axle assembly out from under the tractor to replace these parts or should I just jack up to relieve pressure on the pin and R&R. I have stands and forklift for the heavy work.

Ah! Man! - I was hoping on you to be one of the ones that had been there done that. I am hoping that the hard part is over getting that steering cylinder mess out of there. I'll check back in after church and lunch.

I replaced the bushings on my Hydro 70 but had the thing out on the ground to do it.

However, the red shops do it with the front end still on the tractor tho. As I recall, they leave the ball connected and just jack up the tractor enough to clear.

I pull them out & put on stands. When you grease the center pivot raise the front end up to let the grease get around to the bottom of the pin.You gone this far just as well check spindle bushings & thrust brgs also.

If you do the spindle bushings, the guys at the shop just drive the bushings in & press the new ones in. When I did ours, I cut the old bushings & drove them out. I always thought if you had to ever get all the bushings out--you'd have a real mess. The thrust bearings at the bottom of the spindles were worn out when we did the bushings on ours. Too much grease I suppose.

Yes I know I have a few issues there especially the thrust bearings. Hopefully the only hard part on this will be getting that cast yolk off the top. My bet is that they are froze on with rust like everything else has been. Hope that axle pivot pin is not rusted in too but bet it is.

DO you have any advise on removing the steering knuckle arms. I have not tried it yet but I figure they will be rusted on. Can you get a puller on them. Do you use a lot of heat . Any tips?

I work in a red shop we never rebuild front ends i did my own 966 this last summer there i raised up the front end and pulled the axle clear out maes life alot easier instead of standing on your head
