electrolysis tank

I built my first eletrolysis tank in less than 15 minutes with parts I had on hand. In seconds my rusty parts were bubbling. I got my first prodject tractor 2 months ago and knew knothing about electrolysis untill I found this site. Thank you for all the helpfull information.

Any advice for the first time elecrolysis user would be great. Brian

Make sure you have good venting around your tank and nothing that can cause any sparks, this system creates hydrogen gas, highly explosive.

thank you for the advice. I am well aware of the gas as well as my two sons who were wanting to harvest some. I am watching them all.

Your friend will be a brass brush, a nylon kitchen scrubber, and a water hose. Remove from the tank, then give a good scrubbing, wash with water. Then if done, warm, or blow dry, and quickly prime. Rust will develope instantly if not primed.

Once your parts are clean and brushed, you can spray them with a coating of Phosphoric Acid which will change any remaining rust to black oxide and they won"t rust anymore. I use OSPHO which I get in the paint dept at ACE Hardware for about $10 a quart. Put it in a spray bottle and lightly coat the surface and let it dry. It is paintable. I lightly sand the part before priming to get a smoother surface but it isn"t mandatory. This way there is no possible iron oxide under the primer in any little seams or unreachable places to rear it"s ugly head in the future.

I don't know if you put a battery in yours, but i had to wire a battery in parrallel to get it to work. I bubbled a little bit without it but nothing happened. I but a battery in it and it works great.

I am trying to figure out why you would need a battery. That is a lot of amperage. Maybe your electrode is too rusty or not enough area. Depending on the part size my 10 amp charger shows 1-6 amps of draw. You need two or three tablespoons of washing soda per gallon of water. If you want to clean greasy parts, add a couple of cups of sodium hydroxide disolved in water before adding. This is commonly known as lye. Positive lead on electrode, negative on part. Once set up, the tank and solution are good indefinitely until you just get the uncontrollable urge to clean it out and start over or move the tank.

(quoted from post at 12:01:26 01/03/10) I would assume there are directions somewhere on the site for building a tank? Anyone have the link?
