Does anyone know why the diesel tanks on a MD/SMD have an extended fill neck? The gas ones have a very short if any neck at all while the diesel has a 2" or so extended fill neck. Dont really understand why they did this...

thanks

Andrew

Does seem more diesels have the extended neck than others but not all diesels are extended. All the ones I see look like a repair top added, but I can't say some didn't come that way. If you look down the neck of one, you will probably see another set of locking tabs for the fuel cap down at the original spot. I always though IH or someone sold a repair neck that could be added on if needed. Just a guess though, maybe someone else has a better answer.

I could be wrong but I think Andrew means the tank fill neck is exstended on above the pipe you mean. If he means what I refer to as the long neck, the regular fill neck has a extension added above the the neck from the vent hole you refer to. Most look like there soldered to the original neck. Never checked to make sure its solder though.

D, I looked in the neck and there is no signs of a past repair looks all factory to me. The repair concept does seem to make sence though. This one is attached by taps that have been spot welded into place. Iv had the tractor for serval months and always wondered if there was a purpose, doesnt seem to be a functional part in anymeans i guess.

Thanks
Andrew

Never saw one like that Andrew. Have 3 MD,SMD tanks now and one has a extension and the other 2 have regular necks. Have had others including 400, 450 series with extensions. All I looked at before with long necks had the sloped slots for the fuel cap down inside at the level the extension started up from. Then the fuel cap slots at top of extension.
