Farmall 140 seed plate drive oil seal

I need some help here. I have looked at a bunch of other posts, including

http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=farmall&th=703047

But I can't figure out what to use for an oil seal around the seed plate drive on my 140. It seems like IH has changed the way it handles this. Mine was leaking pretty bad and had a cover plate with a rubber bushing in it that was shot (see photos). The oil seals recommended in the post above have an OD of 2.627" while my aperture is about 2.8", so it won't fit.

Any suggestions??

I had to fix mine a few years ago. I took that small drive shaft and the cover plate to a bearing shop. They measured for what I needed and if I recall correctly, they did not have the exact OD size needed. I had to buy the closest undersize OD seal and epoxy glue it to the cover. (I might have bought a oversize OD and then enlarged the cover plate hole...don't remember exactly). Either way epoxy glue did the job. That was a few years ago and I use it each summer all season long and it has held up OK.

That oil seal was molded to the four bolt plate that you show in the second pic. It is not intended to be replaced separately. Replace the plate if still available from CIH. If you can find an older one from a Super A it is much different and has a replaceable seal I THINK, Been over 40 yrs since I looked at one.

What I would do is to setup the plate on the lathe and bore the hole to the next standard 1/8" size. For example if you are around 2.8, I'd go up to 2.875".

This might be out of the realm of possibilities for some home/farm shops but then you have an easy replacement next time. If you have a friend with a lathe it isn't a long job.

Guys,
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. Mattofvinings - I don't have a lathe so I didn't have any way to expand the size of the hole in the plate. TractormanNC - I tried to find a part number for the cover plate, but none of the parts diagrams for the Super A, 100, 130 or 140 even showed the plate my tractor came with. Pete7 - I looked around for a seal that would match the opening but came up empty.

However, I did come up with a solution that seems to work perfectly. I was able to find a NAPA seal with the right ID and close on the OD to insert into the bore in the final drive. This seal is NAPA #18136 with an ID of 1.813" which is the exact size of the seed plate drive and an OD of 2.786", which is damn close to the bore in the final drive. I put a little RTV around the lip when I pushed it in and I am sure it will stay tight and leak free. The cover plate hole fits the outer rubber lip on this gasket perfectly, although you don't even need to use the cover plate. I thought it would help reduce the dirt buildup and kept it. I think this should work for Super A's as well.

Nice solution! I'll kep that seal number in mind in case I need to fix mine in the future.
