OT - Pickup Tractor

I have an old Chev pkup with an inline 6 and a truck 4-speed with creeper that runs perfect and the frame is solid but but the body is rusted. I am thinking about putting a snowblade on it and just using it on the farm property same as any other tractor. No more license or insurance.

If I drive it down to my neighbors to plow her drive with a SMV sign on the back and don’t go over 25mph, would I be legal?

I know a guy that has ag tires on the back of his pkup tractor.

I am pretty sure the answer to my question is going to be - “If it has a VIN is has to be licensed.”

Just thought I would see what you all thought.

If you drive in on state, city or county roads nope you need insurance and a lience on it. Now if you stay on private roads and land you will be ok.

I don"t know about your state, but in PA there are farm plates. There are a few restrictions, first the vehicle can only be driven up to 25 miles from the owners address, or farm. Second, if the vehicle is not inspected, its only operational from sun-up to sun-set. With these plates the vehicle is exempt from state inspection, but the owner can opt to inspect the vehicle, which allows it to be driven at night. The registration fees are reduced greatly. Used to be $25/yr, but that prolly went up. And per PA vehicle code, all farm registered vehicles must carry minimum liability coverage. I would say your good as long as you stay on your property, but the moment a tire touches a road, you"d technically be illegal.

Depends on what kind of road, time of day, distance involved. It's gonna break down to how convincing you can be to the loacl mountie.
Check your state codes on "farm vehicles". I got out of a ticket on my 6x12 trailer after I checked the codes and it qualifies as a tax exempt farm trailer.

I used to deliver sweet corn about 35 miles away in Kalamazoo everyday for about 4 years using one of my field picking trailers. It holds 6 bulk boxes inline and I had each one strapped. I had a SMV on it and used M-43 and not I-94.
Had a county mounty follow me most of the way and he never stopped me.
The Friday Tractors were built here. His son was a circus trapeze performer and there was a very tall trapeze sitting beside the office building. Back in the day a lot of people used the tractors to go to down shopping. You would always see at least one in the grocery store parking lot. I guess they went about 40mph or better.

Dellbert, I always wanted to get a worthington tractor to run into town to pick up mail and supplies mostly dirt roads.
Thought it would be fun! But still have not gotten one. Oldiron29

With all do respect you might be the most careful driver on the road but accidents still happen. Now you're running around as an uninsured motorist. Bad news for you and them.

Can't answer any of the legal questions but if you want a comfortable tractor to run into town look at the 1939 Minneapolis-Moline model UDLX Comfortractor. Only 123 were built but looks good enough to take to church and work the dirt on the way home. They are pictured in a book titled "Classic and Collectible Tractors" on page 72 and 73. It is credited with being the first cab tractor. There are a couple shown in the tractor photos galley on this site - search on UDLX to view. Just had to share, Hal.

I have a 1979 C20 I use for a farm truck. It cost me about $28/mo in insurance and $3/yr on Farm Tags. I can drive it anywhere and I think that the tags and insurance is reasonable. These are Louisiana costs and I have 3 vehicles insured through AAA.

If I remember right they had bumbers and a licensce plate bracket, headlights tailights, and maybe even a radio. I know it had roll down windows.

Dellbertt- 43 can still be a dragstrip at times especially when you get the people out there with no patience or respect for a SMV sign if they even know what it is. But still less stops than taking Red Arrow!

So I take it you're in Hartford? Those old Friday tractors are quite the machine, I'd really like to see one in action.

How do you like the lake effect? Measured 13" earlier.
