I pulled the pan on this tractor today to start the cleaning up process. A lot of sludge. The oil float pickup is crushed in from the top, the bottom screen part is perfect.(not clean but in good shape). I suspect that the screen plugged and the suction caved it in. Is that possible? If it did then the motor had to be starved for oil and probably siezed up? Taking one of these apart is almost like a murder mystery, what killed it!

There is not anywhere's near enough suction generated by the oil pump to cave it in. I would guess that the oil pan was full of water at one time and froze forcing the pickup up into the crankshaft caving it in.

It was definately full of water. I drained at least 3 gallons. It's a Texas tractor. We generally don't get cold enough for long enough to freeze but it is possible. It either froze or was damaged some time in it's life.

He just make sure you throughly clean the oil pump and the check valve where the two pieces bolt together( spring and ball in there) because they will stick closed and you will build a lot of pressure and blow the oil gauge!
