Key Ignition

Hi!

We have a 1956 Farmall 200 with a keyed ignition. However, it did not come with keys. Can anyone suggest a replacement for this ignition? We have yet to find the fuse. The push-pull is in the fuse's spot. The keyed ignition is in the push-pull spot. Also, what kind of IH Red paint have people found to be the most authentic? I would like to use a spray can on the engine parts.

Any help would be appreciated.

It all depends what you want at the end of the day. If you want to put it back to original then all of the correct parts can be found. If you simply want something that works, anything that can be wired together could be the answer (and believe me, with some of the stuff I've stipped off tractors I've bought - anything is possible!). If you want original or simple and functional you can find someone on this board who can help you wire it. So whether the switch for a 240 will work is really up to you. Sam

Check with your case-IH dealer. There was one common key for cub cadets, 200 thru at least 06 series, and combines starting with the 03 series unless the switch has been replaced. I think $2.00 would buy a key to test your switch. Armand

Whoever worked on this unit probably put in a circuit breaker to replace the fuse. As mentioned, any key will work from the older IH's. Believe the key blanks were Briggs & Stratton.

Try any old riding lawn mower keys you have laying around.
I have several tractors that came without keys and it worked for me. Just about anything that will fit in the slot will turn it.

The standard leather awl on the back of almost every (real Victorinox) Swiss Army knife is a great emergency key.

Jack:
If you want to be authentic, as you indicate by your search for red paint, then get rid of the key switch and just use the push-pull. I doubt if you even have a fuse now, so you can move the push-pull back to where is is supposed to be and use the correct space for a fuse socket again. It appears the push-pull is being by-passed now, by the fact both wires are on one post. For the push-pull ignition switch to work, one wire should be on each of the two posts.
If you want to keep a key switch, then your local NAPA store will have a generic brand that will work fine. Or, as the others have said, you can go to case/IH for one.
Unless you keep your tractor outside and have "punks" in your neighborhood, it would be very simple and logical to put the wiring back like it belongs. You can look in the back of an OEM tractor catalog at a super C wiring diagram, or you can go on the Case/IH website and look it up for a Farmall 200.

I am attaching a picture of the front of the box also.

We still want a key on the tractor because it is outside and once in a while we get bottom feeders coming through.
