Farmall 450 generator

I'm wanting to convert my Farmall 450 gas tractor from 6 volt to 12 volt. Want to keep everything looking original so want to use a generator/regulator system rather than an alternator. Question is, what delco remy generator number will work in this case, and where is a good place to buy one? Thanks, Danto

I have taken a couple 6v generators off my SMs, Ms to a local automotive electrical repair shop & had them converted to 12v, negative ground. Cost was very reasonable, under $35, and they are as as "original" looking as you can get.

I think the generators on the M diesel and 400/450 diesel were 12 volt.

Couple of options, like previous post, convert original gen to 12 volt or just get a gen and regulator for a later 450 as they were 12 volt from factory, still positive ground so no need to change ammeter wires etc.

If you have a 400 before a serial # break that uses a adjustable pulley to tighten belt, delco # 1100997 is one that works. If after the serial break with steel strap adjustment, # 1100996, 1100305 or some GM trucks and autos from fifties into early sixties will work. If you don't care about leaving the mounts original lots of 12 volt generators will work.

just take it to a generator shop and they will convert your 6v gen to 12v. I bought a 400 gas and the previous owner put a real small alt on it. You wouldn"t know its an alt unless you looked up under the hood, just a thought
