560D Basic Questions???

I'm not very familiar with IH tractors beyond the letter series models. Been thinking of a vintage IH tractor with added versatility for use around the farm with more modern features and think that might be a good one. Is it a direct start diesel or a gas over like the MD's? Are they 540 or 1000 rpm IPTO's? Are they fast hitch or 3 point tractors? I've seen enough of them at shows but just never paid that much attention to them before now. I know about the problems with the transmissions and differentials on the early ones which IH replaced. Are there identification features which indicate if they have been retrofitted with the new components? Is there a serial number break for the factory change over versus field retros? They have a fair amount of power for anything I would be doing here in south central Missouri. Thanks for your responses, comments and information, Hal.

I've got a gasser. I believe the diesels are direct start, but someone else will probably confirm that or correct me. 540 rpm, standard with 2 pt hitch, but can be converted. No idea on a break in the serial number, I'd be interested to hear the answer to that one as well. Never had transmission problems with ours.

Side Note: My dad had the tractor for a long time, the TA went out of adjustment and he never fixed it. Now the TA is out completely on the low end. No plans to fix it.

D282 direct start with glowplugs. The serial tag should have been marked when the update was made to the rearend.

the repair would be indicated by a "triangle" on the serial number plate. This would indicate that it has been repaired with the new bearings and such.

oh yeah, Hal. You would like a 560 diesel. Be a great baling tractor. Plenty of power and easy on fuel. But they are like an upgraded M. Climb on from the back and no 3 point. (some have fast hitch) If you want 3 point look for a 656. But you still won't have 1000 PTO or differential lock. If you want that stuff you better look at a John Deere.

You will hear the 282D is hard to start but that is mainly from people that don't understand how glowplugs work. As mentioned below it as very easy on fuel and has many of the basic options you would want in a tractor, live PTO, live hydraulics with a large fluid reserve (better than a 300, 350, 400, 450) most (all?) have power steering and most have a 2 point hitch or can easily have a 3 point added. They are pretty agile tractors and are still used on many "working" farms.

Best part is the 560 is usually a pretty cheap tractor - especially compared to a 656.

Farmall 560 tractors serial # 23926 and higher were built with all the updates. Lower serial numbers were supposed to be marked and updated but some didn't get everything.

Thanks for all the informative comments and I've picked up a lot of good information. Anxious to get to look at a few once this "stay at home" weather moves toward spring. It does appear the fast hitch is the standard factory hitch for them which is what I was hoping for. The info on the reworked rear ends is also good to know. What are considered the downsides of the 560's other then those pointed out by the Cowman? Those certainly aren't high enough to cause problems on this Farmall farm by adding some green. Thanks again and everyone have a very safe and Happy New Year, Hal.

Cowman, you know better then try and get some green stuff in that IH tractor shed with all those red girls. Is the cold weather getting too you and affecting the thought process out there on the prairie. Have a great New Years and hope the new year is our best yet, Hal.

Long nosed tractor, doesn"t turn very sharp,(ours was wide front.) Steering brakes didn"t help much, course we had a loader on it. They actually start very well in cold weather if the glow plugs are kept up. Quiet runner , compared to some. Easy on fuel. PTO clutch and TA are troublesome.

The triangle on the serial number plate indicates the original final drive update was installed. It does not mean the latest axle bearings, inside and out, and pinion bearings and tapered shim on right side diff housing were installed as they came later on. Transmission itself did not receive updates. I did ten of the original updates. Some dealers had the co. personel come out and do theirs but I picked up a lot of good experince as a youngster doing these jobs.

Pete, Thanks very much for your reply. I certainly don't know that much about what all was involved in the retro and in service repair work. These tidbits of information are very useful in getting a good tractor. Would you know at what s/n these other items were installed in production at the plant where the 560's where built? Is there a difference in these items between the diesel and gasoline models? I'm assuming that both had the same problems as power was about the same with both fuel types. Any further info you can provide is most appreciated, Hal. Happy New Year and a great 2010.

I can't come up with a sn number for the first up grade, the 460 was about 11000 and I would say 560 would be in same general area. However, some changes were still being made (lubrication tube to differetial and bull pinions) at 58497. So, you can see, it was a work in progress. So many things were improved as they went along. One of the things I would look for is on the engine, injection nozzles were changed to what was referred to IH midget. Same as later models like 656. Much easier to repair , better and cheaper than original bosch nozzle. In other words, late model 560 is much improved over early models all the way around. Good luck.
