international T340 crawler

Was thinking of buying a gas T 340 crawler, I think it's a 1959 or 60' with gas engine. I don't know enough about the international crawlers, and if parts are still available for repairs. The price is 2600.00 in running /working condition. thanks for any advice. Jim

In working condition, that would be a good price. I owned a TD 340 for a while. Paid a good deal more, but the diesels are more and mine had a 6 way dozer blade on it. Parts that are common to the wheel tractors are available. The parts unique to the crawler are harder to come by. Engine and some drive train parts are same as the 340 wheel tractor. Some cautions. Make sure the steering brakes and clutches are working properly. If the brakes need work, it will be necessary to remove the tracks and then the final drives to get to them. This is a big job requiring heavy lifting equipment, etc. The brakes are disk brakes the same as the wheel 340 tractor. The way this thing steers is that you pull the lever on the side you want to turn. First it releases the clutch on that side and it will gradually turn. Pull back farther and it engages the brakes causing a hard turn. The one I had leaked oil out of the transmission seals onto the brake disks on one side. Brake on that side would not work and could not turn that direction very well. I discovered the drain holes in the brake chamber were plugged with mud. After cleaning those drains and a couple cans of brake cleaner squirted in there, got it to work sort of. Eventually sold it. Buyer fixed it up and is still using it some.

thanks Haas. I called the guy back, and he did say that the steering is not as good as it was , so I assume there is a clutch/brake issue. Im not sure what I should do, Its a few hours from me, I will think on it a bit. Jim

It could be just an adjustment issue. I forgot to say that the clutches that release the drive to the sprokets are located inside the transmission housing and are wet clutches whereas the brakes are dry. The clutches and brakes have to be adjusted to coordinate the clutch release and the brake application. If you decide to buy the thing, you are going to need a set of manuals. The parts catalog and the service manual will set you back nearly $100.
