Super H won't start

I just rebuilt the engine in a Super H, but I haven"t been able to get it started. It will hit but will not run. I have check the ignition and it seams to be correct. I did partially rebuld the carbarator and had troble getting the float set correctly but it seams to be correct now. When I try to start it hits but will not run, it back fires slightly and seams get flooded in that gas will run out of the carb. I have tried adjusting the carb and have tried turning the distribitor slightly, but doesn"t seam to make a difference.
 
With fuel running out of carb the first thing to check is float sticking down.
Tap LIGHTLY on the side of the carb then turn off fuel at sediment bowl, drain carb and see if it will start. If it starts turn on fuel and let it run awhile.
You may also have other problems but this is a start.

Don't use any choke and thottle it up when starting. This will help you get a flooded engine started. Like he said, turn the gas off and try to start it. I would do both.
 
Check your plug wires on the cap to make sure you don't have a pair crossed. Should be in this firing order on the cap:
2-1 As the rotor rotates CW.
4-3

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor
and see if you have good suction while someone makes an attempt to start the engine. You need good manifold vacuum to pull that fuel into the engine.

You may need to recheck your distributor's timing
by bringing No1 piston near the radiator to TDC on the compression stroke. Then remove the cap and see where your rotor is pointing. Should be at the No1 plug tower. Both valves should be closed and the timing marks should be aligned when you're at TDC. If the rotor is off you will need to pull the distributor and then reinstall it so the rotor is at the No1 plug tower. Hal
 
I haven't check the manifold vacum yet, but that will be next soon as the battery gets recharged. I have double checked the spark wires and they are in the corect firing order. I have also checked the timming as you discribed execpt haven't taken the valve cover of to double check that both valves are closed (but they where when I put the engine back together). I am supecting it might be the manifold vacum as the gas only starts running out after I have cranked the engine over a few times. Assuming there isn't enough vacum what might cause that? I did put a rebuilt head on it and a new manifold with all bolts being tourge to specs.
 
Just checked and it has a lot of mainifold vaccum when I put my hand over it. I also pulled the valve cover off and checked that the valves where closed.
 
Pull several sparkplugs and pour in about 2 teaspoons of gas on of the top of the pistons and reinstall the plugs. Then see if the engine will fire when you try to start it. If it does you're not getting any gas to the engine.
You need to check fo gas flow to the carb by didconnecting the gas line at the carb. Should have a full stream of gas. Catch the gas in a clean container. Good flow there remove the tube fitting in the carb where your gas line connects. Should be a screen behind that fitting.
Remove the screen and see if it has a load of rust or dirt in it. If that's clean your carb probably needs a good cleaning. It may be gummed up from old gas. We call this the process of elemination. Hal
 
That engine should start when someone holds their hand over the throat of the carb. We used this method to determine if a car or truck had a defective mechanical fuel pump. You could keep the engine running as long as you kept using
your hand. Hal

Let's go back to basics. First, you need three things:

1) Compression
2) Spark
3) (enough) Fuel

Next, you need to be in the ballpark with regard to ignition timing and carb adjustment.

After that, things like valve lash, no air leaks, etc.

Let us know what you find - as we can all learn more from the experiences of others.

If you are using champion plugs chances are they are gas fouled already as these plugs are junk!

Shhhhhhhh! Don't let my 4 farmalls hear that. They don't know it yet and still run fine for years on them.....
