I have a 1954 Super MTA that I am goign to restore. Can someone tell me if I need to remove the front end to overall the engine?

you will need to remove the front end and the engine as a whole if you want to remove the crank shaft or the cam. You need to remove the timing cover and front pulley. If you just want to grind the valves and re-ring the engine then no you dont have to. However from the sounds of it you want a full true overhaul main and rod bearings, crank ground, cam bearings and have the cam checked for wear; then yes you will have to remove the entire front end.

Several major wear checks to make before you decide to pull the engine.
Drop the pan and pull the head. Pull at least one piston and rod. Check end gap on rings and piston to sleeve gap. Plastigage rod bearing. Check wrist pin wear. Plastigae one main.
Now you know what you need to do. May as well do the head/valves now that it's off.

Thanks to all that responded. Any suggestions on where to buy a complete rebuild kit? I live in the Kansas City area.
