38 to 42 in rear rims

I am running 20.8x38 rear tires on 16" wide rims on my 1486. I do custom hay baling and spend a lot of time on the road. I use to buy used tires out of salvage yards but they are getting very hard to find anymore. My brother inlaw gave me a good set of 20.8 R x 42's. I have heard that 20.8x38 and 18.4x42 are the same hight on 16" rims???? Would there be enough clearence if I went to 18" wide 42" rims to run the 20.8x42's or would they work on 16" wide rims?

There is a guy near me that runs 42 inch rubber on everything. Even the 1066. Looks a little goofy but they fit. Can't remember just what he did but it still has the original cast centers. Special rims maybe?
