Alternator touching valve cover?

I just fixed a couple of minor problems I was having and I don't want to cause a major one in the process. The H has been converted to 12V and I flipped the bracket over so that the alternator fits under the hood and the belt is a little less floppy. The alternator case(if that's the right word) is now touching the valve cover and I am wondering if that is okay. I can't see why it would matter, but if it does I don't want to ruin the alternator. I also put a cotter pin and a washer in the end of the horizontal steering shaft this afternoon and now instead of a third of a turn of play I have no play to speak of, but the wheel is a little stiffer to turn. Thank you all for your helpful advice. I am sorry to post so many questions.

I would do what it takes to get it apart. Vibration is liable to wear a hole in either/ both components, and may put strain on the alternator, cause stator/ rotor contact in extreme case

Adjust your belt tighter and that should get the alternator off the valve cover. Not good to have things touch like that because it will over time wear a hole in the cover. If you can not move it off then take an old inner tube and cut a piece out and put it in as a chuision so as to keep a hole from forming

What 12V alternator is installed on your H? If it is a Delco 10-SI you can gain more clearence with a Hitachi #14231 alternator as they are about an inch less in diameter. If it is the Delco 10-SI you will just need to install a rubber cushion as noted in the earlier posts between the alternator and valve cover unless you want to change alternators. I have the Hitachi on my H with clearence and enough space to adjust the original belt for a tight fit. Hope this helps and if you want further discussion my email is open, Hal.

Thank you all. I'll do what old and farmallhal said and put in a piece of rubber. The only ways I can see to move it away would be to make a new bracket or get a 1" longer belt. I'll post a picture tomorrow once it's light out and I've got the rubber in.

Did you put the old adjustable pulley from the generator on the alternator? If so, just spread the sheaves on the pulley a bit to drop the belt into the groove further. This will allow the alt. to be moved away a small amount.

You cannot use the adjustable pulley on an alternator. That pulley needs a shaft that is about 3/4 of an inch longer than the alternator uses.

It might not be the same; when i bought my M it had been converted to a 12v. it ran well but after a period of time would stop. The batterry would be dead and i'd have to recharge it to get it going. One day I simply did not put the hood back on and the tractor ran all day.

I noticed that the alternator was touching the hood. Hood on -- battery would die and tractor quit. Hood off it runs like a top. Clearly when the hood touched the alternator it caused the alternator to fail. No one here at YT could agree/explain why the hood touching the alternator would do this -- but it did.

Now as for the alternator touching the valve cover . . .
