Rebuilding My H Steering Bolster

I am about to remove my steering bolster from my 43 H. The vertical steering rod feels loose. I am assuming it has bearings? bushing? Can you guys tell me the best way to tear this bolster apart?
Thanks,
Zack

The way I do it is to remove the grill, remove the sector gear cover then jack the front end up high enough for the bolster shaft to come out the bottom of the bolster housing. After you have the front end jacked up you can remove the front wheel assembly from the bolster shaft. Then remove the sector gear. Be careful, the shaft will drop out the bottom. There are 2 bushings in the housing and a bearing in the bottom of the shaft.

I just drive the bushings out with a long bar. When you put the new lower bushing back in make sure you have the grease hole lined up with the grease fitting in the bolster housing.

One of the bolts that holds the front wheel assembly to the bolster shaft
has a raised head. This prevents the wheels from turning 360 degrees. Be sure to put the bolt back in the proper location.

Hope this helps. Rollie

Thanks for the info. I will follow your instructions. Where can i get the bushings and bearing? I have searched around on the net but have not had any luck.
Thanks,
Zack

Wow, I little pricy. I only plan to replace what is bad. Is there anyone who sells the individual pieces?

Interesting note. Back in the 60's I use to buy the rebuild kits at the local farm supply store for around 20 bucks and they always included a can sealed IH bearing. The IH dealer didn't like to hear that.

That is more what i had in mind for these parts, 30-40 bucks would be a bit more realistic than 150.00. Oh well, I really need to tear mine apart to see what all is bad first. I hope the bearing and bushings are all that is bad. I will give my IH dealer a call tomorrow and what what parts they can get.
Thanks for the input guys.

I rebuilt my H Bolster about 2 years ago, following the direction given on this site.. The bushing and bearing were available at local IH dealer, Hoober's in Delaware. I think total bill was less then $100.

I am sure Carter and Gruenwald could sell just the neccesary pieces as well. They are a local IH dealer. Not too big compared to a lot of the local dealers, but I wonder if other CNH dealers can get the stuff as well??? Just a thought.
Just an FYI - You can look up parts on the internet. What I do is use my local dealers link www.triebold.com and navigate from there. Not sure if you can get there straight from the CNH website. This site will tell you if the parts are still available. They have some catching up to do compared to Deere. You can't check price, availabilty, order if unavailable, or order for pickup/delivery like you can on the JD website. I am sure it is coming.

Thanks for this info. I called my Case dealer today and he does not show any parts for a 1943 H front end bolster. So, I will keep on trying. I also try Carter and Gruenwald and see what they say. I am hoping it is just a worn out bearing. I can move the bolster around quite a bit.

I apologize for repeating so much info. It looks like two posts were added when I was typing! I love being on such an active forum, it is better than type and wait a few days...:D
