I have the opportunity to purchase a W14. However the serial number is ws 4132, which matches the serial plate saying its a w14. however all the books say the w14 starting serial number is 4134. what the likely hood the staring serial number is wrong in the books? how can i make sure its a w14 and not a w12? are there are parts i can check to make sure. what are the differences between the w12 and w14. the plate with the serial number on look genuine and original.

many thanks

maybe its a w12 they used up in 14 production. who knows. the block number and the tag will match. if it says it on the serial tag and the tag looks legit, do it. neat little tractors...pg

Very few differences. The governed engine rpm was dropped from 1700 to 1650 rpm to match that on the F-14 which went from 1400 to 1650 rpm. The oil pump was changed to have a floating screen, the crankcase vent was changed from the pipe diagonally down the front of the engine to a vent on the right hand side of the tappet cover. The pneumatic tyred tractors had demountable rims on a cast wheel instead of the F & H spoked wheels for the front wheels on the earlier tractors, no change on the back pneumatic tyred wheels. By then I suspect all the front frames had a option for fitting a starting motor below the governor housing. The other changes to the seat and radiator shutters for the kerosene tractors occurred earlier in 1937 and where therefor also on the last W-12s

According to the IH Archives in Madison, Wisconsin, the serial number you give as the first W-14 (WS-4134) is correct. This tractor was built on March 22, 1938. I will also say that I have seen errors in these original lists that I know with first hand knowledge are incorrect; so I would have to say that if you tractor's serial plate says W-14 at serial WS-4132 it is what you think it is. I would ask if it had the breather in the valve cover or not. Would be interesting to hear.

Many Thanks for your comments. Its very interest to hear all information, I will be using this forum in the future. I have a w12 but was brought in bits and is how it remains today, so its difficult to compare. Someone said that the crank breather should run down the front of the engine on a w12, does this connect to the rocker cover? as I dont believe my w12 has the brether at the moment, but cant see where it connects the rocker cover either. I look forward to your comments. I am going to look at the w14 tractor on wednesday so with post some pictures for people to see. Many Thanks

On the 12 series engines, there is an elbow screwed into the front of the block on the right-hand side just below the cylinder head. This I presume connects to the cavity for the no 1 cylinder valve push-rods. A pipe is screwed into this elbow and runs diagonally across the front of the engine finishing on the left-hand (manifold) side of the engine just above the level of the crankshaft. On the 14s this breather was replaced by one attached to the right-hand side of the rocker cover.
