M using a lot of gas?!?!

Hello again everyone. I guess i"ve never fueled up my M all the way. Ussually put in about 5-10 gallons and run it till it goes empty. On a couple gallons of gas i can putt around the yard with no load maybe a total of 2 hours doing little chores with the loader...It does smoke quite a bit, I"ve messed with the carb, made it richer and it smokes a lot more, made it more lean and it starves but still uses a lot of gas. It"s a real nice smooth running tractor without a problem...but this...Is something INSIDE the carb outta wack??

The M burns 3 gallons per hour when running under full load. So, while doing your light work, it burned about a gallon an hour, that sounds about right. The M is less fuel efficient running at partial load than full load.

Thank you all very much, i hopped in the shower and came back to 3 posts already dang...thanks again everyone, i just thought it was a lot just for puttin around the yard doin nothin.

A gas engine would have to be in very bad shape to "use nearly the same amount of gas if it's idling or plowing"

With all due respect, Glen, I fail to see how that is possible if the engine is in half-way decent running condition.

Have you checked the air cleaner cup for build-up---dirt or ice [if cold enough]? Maybe a restriction somewhere in the air intake?

I'm sure it was a typical folksy exaggeration, meant to mean, "it uses a lot of gas; what you're seeing is typical..."

Just carrying around a loader is working the tractor. Using same to move things around is also working the tractor. It sounds to me that if you are puttering around for two hours with that loader and only using a couple gallons you are getting pretty fair efficiency for an old gasser. I use 3 gallons per hour as my estimated useage when I cost out a job using the MTA. It always seems to work out pretty fair.

an m can be a pretty thirsty tractor, especially compared to an h. when you say it smokes a lot, is it black smoke? if it belches out a lot of black smoke when you throttle it up quickly, its prolly running way to rich. generally to set the main jet on the carb, have the tractor warm and then set the throttle wide open. turn the main jet in till it starts to stumble, then back it out till it gets sweet. it shouldnt smoke black. pull a spark plug and see if they are black and sooty. running to rich a mix will wah the oil off the cylinders and lead to pre-mature wear. also will dilute the oil with gas.

I agree, the M has a much bigger thirst than the H. Farmed with both an H and an M and a D17 as a kid and even considering the horsepower difference nothing Beat the H for fuel efficiency. 10 gal fillup in the morning, 10 gal at lunch and you could put in a good 10 hour day pulling 2-14s plowing in clay. Good memories now but seemed like hard work back then.

don't be to concerned ,dad claimed his m with sm jets, dome top pistons, high altitude head and a few other changes, would suck up 5 gph of high test gas like a clock ticking when pulling a silage cutter and wagon behind it chopping good corn
