Farmall 300 head

When removing the head I noticed one nut had a washer under it. It was located in the middle on the manifold side. Should this be there? Maybe someone didn"t have the the stud turned all the down? I also noticed no valve seals. Does this engine not use valve seals? I took the engine apart to replace the rings, but ended up finding 3 cracked pistons. 2 at the skirts and the other was cracked from the skirt all the way up to the top of the piston. Thanks.

I always put a grade 8 flat washer under the nuts on a head it spreads the pressure out over the stud sleeve that's in the head.

Yes I was thinking of using new valve seals anyway. I guess back in 1955 they may not have had seals available. I will get washers and use under all the head nuts. This makes sense as well. Did these engines normally crack the pistons? This engine had the overbore (3.625") kit installed with the stepped head pistons. Thanks for the info thus far.

The 300 head uses just one washer under a stud. It should be on the stud that goes through a pressed in pipe in the head. If you look closely you should be able to see which hole in the head has the pipe installed.

Thanks Owen. I took a look and see what you mean. The washer was in that position. I am wondering now if I should put washers on for the other studs.

Thanks Cliff. I'm sure the new inframe engine kit I ordered has new wrist pins in it, but I am not sure about bushings.
