Broken steering, Farmall H

Hi,

part of the steering on my dad's H failed a few days ago (right before the big storm we got a few days ago). The tractor has hydraulics that look like an add-on, and with the wide front, power steering (Was this standard? The Eaton cylinder looks quite new.)

The part that failed is a little coupling right after the power steering unit - visible in the photos below. The two pieces fit inside each other (with a spline?) and have stripped out.

Two questions. (1) Is this coupling standard, and if so, where can I find it. Should my local IH dealer have them on the shelf? (2) How in the world do I R&R this coupling? I can't figure out how to pull them apart/off the tractor. (I've already searched the archives and looked through the shop manual. The procedure doesn't seem clear yet.)

Thanks!

Well I do not see the photo, but I need to ask if you are talking about a torque motor (under the hood above the rear of the engine) or a cylinder with push pull action at the front tierods/drag link. (On the front axle) either way a spline coupling should be available from Eaton. Or a good (experienced) supply store. Motion industries, Some established NAPA, and others. If it is on the steering shaft, under the hood, the front 1/2 of the shaft comes out by removing it from the gear box. Remove the large plug/nut at the front, and it will unscrew out to the front. Take pictures of everything. Don't loose pieces and put things back the way they were. JimN

I found the pics, that is a torque motor. The coupling might be able to be taken off if the torque motor can be loosened and moved toward the steering wheel, (usually not) if so my first post is correct, pull the shaft. Jim

That coupling is available aftermarket as I have replaced a couple in the last few years. Not a CASEIH part.

what you got there is the char-lynn slip fit coupler. that rascal is about 131.00 . steiners tractor parts sells them. there is also an economy coupler available for 29.40. if the end of the torque generator lines up good with the steering shaft, you can use the economy coupler. if not, its the slip fit. sometimes you can loosen the bolts that hold the front bolster to the frame rails and get a littlw wiggle to align the shaft better.

That's a Charlynn output shaft coupling. Unlikely the CIH dealer will have a replacement. However an aftermarket parts dealer that stocks Charlynn PS should have a new one. I got one thru Carter & Gruenewald (www.external_link) several years ago.

Probably the easiest way to replace is to knock the roll pins out of both coupling halves. Then unscrew the bearing cap on the front of the steering box and rotate/slide the steering worm & shaft forward an inch or so clear the coupling.

Note! There are TWO roll pins in each coupling half - a small one one nested inside a larger one. Be sure to replace all the roll pins with new. Don't cheat and use a single large pin in each coupling half. Otherwise you risk shearing a pin and loosing steering when it is most needed. (Don't ask how I learned this...!)

jim,he'll need to pull the steering shaft forward out of the bolster. the coupler is held in with roll pins. the torque genny is bolted to the center steering support, no wiggle room backward.

There should be a short length of hose that fits over/encloses the coupling.

After installing the new coupling pack the coupling center (splines) with grease. Then slide the hose over the coupling and secure the ends with hose clamps.

Thanks all for the part name and instructions. I'm disappointed to hear that my local dealer doesn't have the part on the shelf. Oh well.

Thanks again.

I found one CHEAP on Ebay. It was advertised as a JD part, but i asked for the dimensions, and sure enough all I needed to install it was some 2150 over the green paint.
And you gotta have this coupler. Solid will weck the system. This one had some wiggle room both laterally and horizontally
