Install 544 Gas Block Heater

I would like to install block heater in a gas 544. Dealer told me that frost plug heater won"t fit. I would like a block heater, but can"t find any holes in the block to tap into. I did find one on top of thermostat housing for the return. My final option is splicing into lower radiator hose, but this doesn"t look to be very effective because it rises up to the water pump and not much heat is going to flow to block. Ideas?

I just installed a lower hose heater in 1 of our tractors and it raised the temp in the radiator from 25 degrees to 80 degrees in 4 hours. The block is warmer than the outside temp , but I do not know how warm. I think they work on the principal that hot water is less dense than cold and tends to rise circulating the water through the system. It seems to work well and warms up much faster.

BTW it was a 600 watt Zero Start heater and the tractor was a Farmtrac 55 diesel. All aluminum body with a temperature cut off. If the water temp get above 245 around the heater (and it does) it cycles on and off to avoid "melting " something. It was a pretty good quality. Here is a link to their application guide, but do not see one for a 544. It has the lower hose heaters in it too.

If it has a drain plug in the side of the block like an H, get a tank heater mounted so the output goes to a T-fitting where the temp gauge sending unit is. Inlet to heater from the drain fitting. It will heat the block without losing heat in the radiator.

I think your dealer got mixed up between the gas and diesel engines. Go to an auto parts store and see what they have listed for a block heater for tractor. You should have a C200 engine, four cylinder version of the C301. You should be able to use the same heater as a C221, C263, C291, or C301.

There is such a thing called a circulating heater it has a pump on it and you should be able to put it into the drain plug and maybe up by the thermostat. I have seen them installed but i cant picture exactly where its hooked up. Erik.

I just checked my 544 and I have one of those that goesin the heater hoses. One outlet is on the rt lower radatior tank and the other one is where temp sendor goes. Put a tee where the sender screws in put sender in one end of tee and a nipple for hose in other end.
