can anyone tell me a cheaper way to put a stsrteron a f-20 other then factory made. I heard it was done to put afly wheel on the drive between the tran. and the engine

Yes just get a matched starter and flywheel make the bracket to mount the starter and go for it. I have seen it done acouple times. One older fellwo says hes too old to get a broken arm now.

leon, You said cheepest, I will say the ring gear on clutch to tranny coulper with a starter would be the easyest and cheepest. I have seen so many variation. I have seen a V pully add to the belt pully with a starter. I have seen a starter add to the rear PTO and even a V pully add to the front crank pully with a starter. Alot of Ingenuity out there. If a guy don't want to crank who knows what they will think up.

Back in the day it fell my lot to spend my summers cultivating with F 20. On damp dewy mornings tractor was hard to start so I began parking it on top of a small hill and if it did not want to start and no one was around to pull it with truck or another tractor I would go to barn harness mule and and pull it down hill to start and stop mule with brakes, worked every time.

Clever ideas here. I've spent a lot of time on these old birds. If the plugs are good, the mag is hot, the points are good, the timing is right and the impulse coupling works as it should, they are not hard to start at all. A little starter fluid in the air intake won"t hurt, either. Just don't push down on the crank. If one of those cylinders fires too soon, it'll kick like a very big mule, and you won"t have the use of your arm for quite a while.

My Dad rigged a starter on our Regular when we first got it in the early 60's took some flywheel and welded it to the coupler between the clutch bell/ trans, and made a bracket in there for an early Ford starter. He did this with FEW tools, a buzzbox and basic tools.

He may have done some lathe work on the coupler---he had access to a small lathe at work.

Leon-We mounted a ring gear fron an M onto the belt pulley of our Regular, and made a bracket to mount the starter from a 560 diesel. Spins her over real good. That leaves the tranny coupling free for an easy way to mount a pulley to drive a generator or alternator.

i dont worry about the hand cranking one bit, you just need to make sure the timing is correct and dont have the lever in advanced position when cranking.this is the reason people get hurt and then blame it on the tractor.but you need to know your tractor. i hesitate at someone elses as you dont know where the timing is and it could kick you as i found that out also. but safety first.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you have a full muffler with baffles on that tractor. You don't want any warped valves. ;>)

Hello Leon,

There is another way of getting a starter on! Buy a starter that is already mounted! :)

That reminds me of the guy who use to pull start his tractor alone. He would would hook up the chain to his tractor and truck, get both going, hope out of the truck jump on the back of the tractor and pop start it and then hit the brakes and bog the truck down. I think a mule would be safer though.

I saw an F-12 with an added starter at a show last year, and it was really a pretty simple set-up and it worked. The PTO shaft was extended and had a 16 inch diameter sprocket mounted in the end of it. A piece of 40 chain went from that to the starter motor (with a small sprocket on it) mounted close to it on the hitch. It would of course prevent you from ever using the PTO, but it worked great. I saw the owner start the thing several times that day. I can't see why an F-20 couldn't be rigged the same way. I think I took a picture of it---if I find it, I'll post it.

i put a flywheel off a 80's dodge van in the coupler between tranny and clutch on a F-20. seems like i had trouble getting starter to mount for correct direction. worked OK been a few years, sold tractor. need a guard on flywheel
