350 utility hydraulic problems

I have a 1957 international 350 utility and when it's cold outside (like 2 degrees or less) the hydraulics work pretty good but if it's warm at all they won't lift much weight, only about 2 or 3 hundred pounds in the bucket. and it acts like the relief valve is kicking out because the pump is putting out all kinds of pressure, but i'm not sure where the relief valve is I'm guessing it's in the pump. anyway any ideas? or does anyone know exactly how to get to the relief valve? thanks!

How do you know "its putting out all kinds of pressure"? Have you put a gauge on it?
Sounds to me like a classic case of a worn out pump. If it has never been replaced, you are due one after 50 plus years.

The symptom is probably a worn pump, rather than a relief valve. I say this because the relief valve would work cold or warm. If it is a steady reduction from cold to warm, probably flow rating the system would spell out the problem. JimN

Hi Jordan, when we owned a 300U back in the late 50s when the hydraulics started acting up and the pump would make squealing sounds it was always time to clean the wire mesh filter in the hydraulic reservoir under the seat. Be careful as you have to remove the seat and the top half of the reservoir and it has to be lifted staight up to prevent damage to the filter. IT IS HEAVY.

Can the inverse be true? If my 2606 power steering doesn't work any better, or worse for that matter, during a cold winter or hot summer startup, then the pump would be at the bottom of my list for potential problems? My steering always seemed to quit bypassing and work better after warmup.

Thanks. I still want to pull out and R&R my flow divider and pilot control valve someday.

thanks for all your replies, and I have cleaned out the screen in the resevoir and the reason I think it is a relief valve is because when it is cold out it feels like the relief valve is sticking and letting it lift cause the bucket will pick the back wheels off the ground if it comes up against something too heavy and sometimes halfway up it'll just kick out and drop. so anyone know exactly how to get to the relief valve?

I tried to post a pictorial of the hydro system but it won't work.
Go to the IH parts page and type in 300 then scroll to the U and hydraulics.
The link below may work.
The pump is more than likely the problem. If you have the aluminum pump they usually cannot be rebuilt.
BUT, I had a similar problem with my case 1030 and it was the relief valve sticking and NOT the pump. All I did was take the relief valve out and clean it and put it back in and it works fine.

YES!! it's finally fixed! thank you so much dellbertt it was the relief valve sticking and not the pump and I Never would have found the valve without that site you gave me, it now works great! it will lift hard enough to squish the front tires flat. thank you so much.
