About 25 miles from Osseo.

Everything I said still stands too. Did you think that you knowing exactly where I live is going to change my opinion?

He was just having a little fun. As I recall your response was a little caustic and solicited some harsh replies. He was bragging about being able to determine your ISP location. I don't care about that.

We're not all novices on this site, and you will find that people with many years of experience may have different experiences with the same issue. That is, two people may do the same thing and get different results. That leads each one to believe he will get the same results every time. For instance I have never had front end wobble because of a worn sector gear, it has always been the lower bolster bushing. Five times. Not 100 or 1,000 times. But it convinces me to look at the lower bushing first. I have always found a little play in the sector gear was not the problem. So it is hard for me to believe it ever is the problem, but I don't question experienced people who have that problem. Same thing with steering sector gears on H's and M's. I have 12 M's and 6 H's and have not been into all of them but none that I have opened have 360 degree gears, so the guys that say "turn the sector gear half a turn" sound silly to me. That does not mean 360 degree gears were not produced, they were.

You were right, I have never experienced warping valves on an M from running one with a straight pipe. The second half of that is that I have run an M with a straight pipe for several years with no problem with valves. I did break a manifold catching the pipe on a branch at the end of a field while turning a little close to the fence. That taught me the real value of a sheet metal muffler.

Now, you need to own up. Have you ever warped the valves on an SM Farmall because you ran a straight pipe exhaust? Newer tractors and automotive engines don't count because that was not the subject. The subject was impact of a straight pipe on a SM. If you have warped valves on newer engines then you were guessing about what would happen with an SM and guessing on this forum will get you into trouble because there are a lot of genuine experts who read (to learn) but rarely post unless they see someone being led astray.

No, I have never warped the valves. And I have never seen it happen either. I was one who called BS on that whole theory. Guessing on this forum is what I have a problem with. I know there are some darned sharp people here. Unfortunatley they keep their mouths shut alot of the time for fear of being jumped by the "experts" who in all actuality don't know sheeet from shinola but who are more than willing to think they know better because they have heard it from thier uncle's cousin's nephew's brother who overheard something in a coffee shop 30 years ago.

Before you ask, no I'm not an expert. I do know enough to know BS when I see it though.

Doofus. From your first post to this one you have simply attacked
the other folks opinion. The issue here is not warped valves. the real issue is why you feel it necessary to attack others. We post here to help one another. Yes, I know you are getting a thrill out of
attacking others but....you come across as a very young 14 year old
with your attitude. I assume you are an adult. If so you have a problem.

Personally I enjoy reading all of the responses to a question or problem someone else posts. Most of the answers are based on personal experience. Most of us have some experience in engine and tractor repair.
My father was employed by IHC. I usually had to learn the hard way. That seems to be the best teacher. By that I mean that I usually started out thinking I knew more than anyone else. Usually wound up finding out that I didn't know anything. I always found people where more than glad to teach me if I showed interest in the job. I also learned that people will treat you the way you treat them. I am sure that you have experience that you can contribute to this forum.

I think maybe the idea of warped valves with open exhaust, came from the old jalopy type stock cars that ran with just exhaust manifolds. No I personally have never had this happen but i have heard of it. I worked on railroad machines for 25 years. Everytime I think I am learning something, I find out something new. Just my thought. Thanks Bernie Steffen

Never mind, You are right and nobody else can be.

Some of those "helpfull" posts I read here are going to end up getting someone killed someday.

You have a Merry Christmas Doofas. I agree about the valves. I also don't think you can warp the valves on an M.

I know a guy that built a homebuilt airplane that had a 100 HP Continental aircraft engine installed. The four exhaust pipes were short, probably 4" or so. He got in trouble once and rolled the plane upside down. He jerked the throttle back and time he got it upright his valves were warped. I'm guessing the exhaust valves.

Same guy was flying some type of plane that was placarded DO NOT SPIN. He did it anyway and wound up in a flat spin the aircraft would not recover from. He was at 5000' and the vertical speed indicator was reading 2000' per minute. About two minutes to hit the ground. Broke his back. I guess he's still around as I havent heard anything different.

Maybe where some stories of warped valves come from. David...............

The Piper Pawnee that our glider club used to tow gliders with had
problems caused by super cooling the valves. They would run wide
open up to two thousand feet, the glider would release and the
pilot would chop the throttle put the nose down and glide back to
the airport. This for perhaps twenty five tows a day. A lot of
difference between that engine and a cast iron tractor engine.

Agreed, I have no interest debating what 2 years of Tech school, 33 years experience & the buying and selling of over 400 tractors has taught me with what some "instant expert" has learned from hearing about or doing in 1 project......1 time. That being said, Hugh wasnt disagreeing with you calling BS on it, he was disagreeing with the manner in which you called BS.

I guess I am the fool in some posts as I only have first hand experience on three machines. I have only ran a straight pipe on an H, SMTA, and GASP>>>MD. (If you remember the original post it said that was where you would really see the problems) I always pull/push (I don't remember) the decompression lever back to diesel when I shut it down to help ensure good valve seating and "proper warping." I also based this assumption off of watching about 15 IH tractors in our pulling club not have any problems with warped valves. This was info was inaccurate in some peoples minds.

I agree, there can be too many "experts" that go off of what they heard on this fourm and most other fourms for that matter. This is one reason I haven't posted my "MD Crankcase Dilution" question for over three years on the forum. (See it below if you have some first hand experience :D ) I probably came off as arrogant, especially in type, by saying don't tell me it's the lift pump bc I changed it. The problem is so many of these "experts" heard somebody had a problem with a lift pump on the only MD in the county so that HAS to be the problem with crankcase dilution EVERY TIME.

So the lower bolster bushing? All three tractors have terrible front ends. I do not have a 360 gear, but I do know of one (and only one) SM with it. When this guy got the tractor he called me and asked why it did that. I said, beats me bc none of mine do it!

BTW, Independence also sucks. Still too many hills!

Thanks Rick. My first impression of the original posts was that
he was simply trying to "stir the pot". If he had a point to make that was not the way to do it. I respect everyones opinion here. But.....I don't respect insults and caustic remarks. We all have different degrees of experience working on tractors and equipment. All opinions should be welcome. We can sort through them and hopefully find the answer to our problem.
