46 H oil leaks

I have a 1946 H that is starting to leak oil at a pretty good rate now. The source of one of the leaks is underneath behind the Lift All reservoir from what looks like an inspection plate. I haven"t had a chance to really look into yet but was just wondering if this is a common leak and how difficult is it to repair. The other leak seems to be from the Lift All itself. Any information/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It is OK to remove the inspection plate between the Liftall and the transmission. If a seal is leaking pretty good and the liftall drive coupling has slung oil everywhere, you might not isolate the source until you wipe everything down then watch for it. There are 3 seals in that area that can be your problem. The Liftall pump/reservoir should be removed from the housing to replace any of them anyway. They all can be replaced without splitting the tractor at the transmission. Once you have found the source of the leak, do an archive search to find suggestions on replacing that particular seal.

My H did that, also. My favorite repair man (I know how to clean and fuel and change oil on my H) had to put a new seal on the drive shaft. He said the old original seals were made of felt. He installed a neoprene seal and end of problem. And...he did it without removing the Lift-All. Be careful about removing that Lift-All as it very heavy.

Maybe you will get as lucky as I did, my M had what I thought was a lift all seal leak for couple of years and when I finally got around to fixing it found it was only one of the outlet pipes was not tight.

He meant is it coming from the engine, the transmission or the LiftAll. In my definition, as soon as I pour it in the LiftAll it becomes hydraulic fluid.

If it is hydraulic fluid you may have a bad LiftAll seal or you may have another leak on the unit. It will all run out the same place. Check that the three external pressure connections to the LiftAll are tight first.

One thing you might consider is to totally drain the Liftall pump to eliminate that as the source of the leak, put a clean piece of cardboard under the pump, bell housing and front of transmission and let it sit for a couple of days. If it's the rear main seal, seal that the trans. coupler goes through, or transmission seals, the oil will be dark looking. If you see nothing, you probably could conclude that it's the Liftall pump seal. The original seals in them were leather, which eventually just gives way. The replacements are neoprene, which probably will never give out. Replacing it is not complicated, just labor intensive. Just my .02

I agree. I put hytran in my H's liftall. Is that a bad thing? It really isn't going to do any good to put engine oil in the thing. As soon as I hook it up to any implement I will be diluting that enging oil with hytran.
