Replacing Bendix

OK so I have the starter apart but I cant get the 2 bolt lose to remove the Bendix gear. Any tricks to this, I have the washer bent up so it isn"t stopping it but still cant break it loose. Also how do I fit the starter assembly back into the case?

What model are you working on? I just removed the starter on my AV so I might be able to shed some light if you have that model.

I used an impact wrench on mine. The bolt heads are shallow, so you might need to grind down the face of the socket so it is on the bolt head as much as possible.

yeah ill try that last, just wasnt sure there was somthing obvious I was missing...Also how do you put the actual starter motor back in (line it up properly)

I'm sorry FarmallJoe I didn't realize what part you were talking about, I thought you were just talking about removing the bolts from the flywheel housing. Now I realize you were probably talking about the ones on the shaft itself.

As for the two bolts on the shaft itself I didn't take those off, I actually took in the whole starter to get rebuilt at a local shop that does just that since my starter was in pretty bad shape from sitting so long as you'll see from the pic:

Maybe if you spray some Breakaway on there and can get it in a vice somehow and get at it with an open ended wrench or a good socket. I'm going to pick up my rebuilt starter tomorrow and I can ask that guy if he has any input since he has some experience with them and get back to you.

Yeah im just replacing the starter gear, I guess it is just on there real good. The next problem is getting the actual starter (shown in the photo) back in the case...

Ahh I gotcha, I don't know any tricks to that since I took mine in pieces to the starter guy because I couldn't get it back in the housing either. Sorry I'm of absolutley no help!

Don't know the exact price yet but when I first asked if he works on those I asked for a ballpark and he said maybe around $60 but then when I dropped it off he said it wouldn't cost too much.

I'm expecting anywhere from $50-60, I'm planning on picking it up tomorrow and will let you know the exact amount then and try to post a before and after picture of it.

Take the band off the back of the starter housing. Slide the armature into the windings until the commutator ( with the little copper strips at the back) is back against the brushes. Pull the brushes up so they sit on the commutator. You may have to go around 1 1/2 times to get them all to stay up on the the commutator.

Before you put the armature in, clean off the commutator with a pencil eraser and put a drop of oil or a smear of grease in the bearing cup at the back. And put a little smear of grease in the bushing on the nose too.

Putting the armature in a vice might not be a good idea.

Ok so it took me a few days to go down and pick up my rebuilt starter but now I've got it and it looks pretty good. The guy cleaned up and lubed everything and also turned it a bit, also freed up the button. It did end up costing me $50 but worth it considering I don't have the stuff to do it myself or the knowledge for that matter. Here are some before and afters:
