how do you find out which eng is in tractor thought all were same but went to get oil filter and it has 2 listed serial no is 14312 on tractor

Well, maybe the difference is the gas or diesel engine filter. All the 6-cylinder gassers, from the 221 to the 301 use the same oil filter unless yours has a spin on filter added like my 806. I don't believe that add-on was factory though.

So, do you have gas or diesel?

gas thought they listed 263 and 372 disel were different but I think the bigger one might be disel and was listed wrong in book

The engine should be either a spark ignition (gasoline or propane) C263 or a compression ignition (diesel) D282.

I think all the gas engines use the same spin on filter. On my c-263 I use a wix 51768. The prior owner used a Wix 51158. They are basically the same. I think it crosses to the Fram PH8A which is a standard filter for lots of engines. go to caseih.com to get the part number for the cartridge style.

ph8a sounds like a ford products filter or a 3/4" thread. I seem to remember IH having a 1" or so thread.
there are at least three wix filters that fit the IHs from the 70s and later, with the only major difference being the height. some applications may vary.

Karl is right. I just had it in the back of my head it was a common one like the ph8a. The IH engine spin on filters are a 1" & 12 thread. The fram cross ref is PH 2842, PH6354, & PH6923. I just remember walking into to TSC and seeing a whole shelf of Fram filters that would work. Same for Walmart. Too bad I don't like fram anymore.

wixfilters.com has a good computer cross ref that you can put about any filter number in. Then you can bring up the specs including the filtration micron ratings. You can then go to O'reillys website who carry wix and it can tell you if your local store has it in stock or if they have to order it. That and/or a phone call saves a lot of driving.

One of the wix filters is shorter. You can look at the specs for all of them and decide which is better. Either I liked 51768 or that was the one in stock when I went there.

The IH numbers for hydraulic filters also cross ref with wix and oreillys carrys them.
