Busted Rear End Case

I am extremely discouraged today. I just found the rear end case is busted on my 43 H. It is on the right side just were the case rolls up to the side. Looks like someone tried to repair it with fiberglass many years ago. I don't know what to do now. I am pretty sick over finding this. I had no intentions of splitting the cases and getting into a major rebuild. Any ideas or suggestions? If i can get my camera working i will post some pics of the damage.
Thanks,
Zack

At some point in that tractors life, a bearing failed which let a bull gear drop down and that is what broke the case. It is not the end of the world. I've got a 1940 M with a patch in that same area. It adds character, and proves that the tractor used to do an honest days work.

If it's not creaking or leaking, don't worry about it. It's been like that for decades for sure.

I have '40 A that has had a broken case, since repaired with welds and restored. It is now a trailer queen but had a working history at some point. We're both retired now.

This is a common ptoblrm on a H and M. I cracked mine last summer when two bolts out of the differential rolled over to the right side when I burried the right wheel in mud.

If it does not leak, live with it. If it is leaking, try J-B Weld.

My 400 was broken on the left side. Someone gobbed a bunch of weld on it. I ground it off and added J B Weld to it and You will not know it was broken, if you did not look at it real close.

if you are concerned about it, see if you have a good portable welding service near you . they can come out at weld up the crack at your place. generally about 200 dollars or so.

(quoted from post at 17:39:23 12/19/09) did you serve on the USS Forrestal?

glennster.........My dad served on the Forrestal. I am building a memorial to the 134 men who were killed on July 29, 1967 in the explosions on her flight deck. Please visit: www.forrestalmemorial.com

Yes, this crack is leaking a lot. That is what led me to find it. I have a good friend that has another case i can get and do an exchange. That looks like quite a bit of work but i am very picky about stuff like this. I want it right with no cracks or leaks. Not sure yet, I will know more tomorrow when i dig out all the fiberglass. Then i can see just how bad it really is.
Thanks,
Zack

zack, very interesting website, and quite a project. my step dad served on the USS Antietam, CV36 in the korean war.

That is really neat. I am addicted to American military history in general but more specifically WWII history. Of course because of my dad the USS Forrestal has a special place with me. I wish more people would get involved with our Veterans. They protect America in the past, present and future. They deserve respect and honor for it.

I am thinking about trying some JB Weld instead of changing the whole case. I just think that might be more that i want to tackle. I feel like JB Weld will do the trick and once i get it painted over it won't be real noticable.

I went aboard the Forrestal to see my brother when the ship was in Newport News for a short refit. That probably would have been late spring of '66. I was stationed about 150 miles away at Camp Lejeune, NC. He took me all around the ship. A few months later, I spent three months on LST 1177. I think that was its first deployment.

It was later that Sen John McCain had one of his (four ?) accidents on board.

Yes, The incident with McCain is the one that 134 men were killed in. That is why i am building this memorial, its to honor these men who have been forgotten. Forrestal is now sitting at Newport, RI waiting to be sunk or scrapped.

We'll more bad news today. I thought i might get by with JB Weld. Not gonna happen. This case is severely busted into 4-5 pieces, it is pretty well shattered. Someone tried to brase it back together and fiberglass over it. Not good, it is leaking everywhere. I had no idea this was the problem. I thought when i bought it that the axle housings were leaking and that would be an easy fix. I did not bother to crawl under the tractor and investigate it like i should have. I am now forced to replace the case. Oh well, I have more time than money so my winter project just got more invloved. I do have a favor to ask of you guys. Can someone send me the diagrams of how the rear end case comes apart? I do plan on getting a manual but it will be a while. I only need a scematic from the hydraulic pump back. I would greatly appreciate it. You can email it to me at [email protected]

Thanks,
Zack

BUMP :D

Hey guys, Here is what my dad and i have done over the last 3 days. I removed my old rear end, picked up this replacement rear end and got it lined up. My new seals should be here tomorrow and then i can couple it back together. It was a job for sure but i am much happier now with a case that is not busted.
