New H questions

I just traded an Allis C for this H and I have a few things I need to do to it. One thing is that the rear rubber is mismatched, with one side a 10x38 Wards Riverside with a lot of tread and the other a Goodyear 13.6x38 that is worn down very low. I am wondering if the 10 is the old designation for 11.2? I was told it had a 12.4 on that wheel, but it looks too narrow for that. Does the 13.6 look too far gone, or should I look for another worn one to match it? I am looking to spend as little as possible, so I am wondering if I could sell the 10 or if it is too odd-looking and wouldn't be worth anything. I am planning to use the H for haying and hauling wagons in the woods, if that affects how much tread is needed.
My second question is about the tranny/rearend. It is frozen solid since we had a couple of nights around zero, and I don't know how much water it has in it. I pulled the rear end drain plug and there was solid ice behind it. I am wondering if I cover the tractor with a tarp and run a 35k BTU salamander under there if I can thaw it out enough to drain or if I should just wait till spring. I am sorry this is so long-winded. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Original tire size was 10x38, which then became the 11.2x38, and the current size is 12.4x38.

The tire on the right side looks to be much wider than a 13.6x38 and appears to worn down enough that it will have very limited traction.

The tire on the left side does have excellent tread, but it is an industrial type tread, more like what you would see on a road grader, and while it will probably work for you, it really isn't the style of tread that is needed for what you will be doing with the tractor. I think I would try to sell the good tire, and then try to find a matching set of agriculture rear tires.

Rustyfarmall, thank you very much. I'll do what you said about
trying to sell the one and buy a pair. The one on the right does say
on the sidewall that it is a 13.6, but it may be the angle from which
the photo is taken that makes it look wider. The 10 is
weatherchecked around the lugs, and I don't know what to ask for
it. Any ideas as to what might be a fair asking price? Thanks
again.

Don"t see any harm in a slow thaw-out. Let"s hope the freezing hasn"t cracked the case somewhere. I imagine that if you can just warm up the room or at least the area near the tractor, you could expect it to start thawing soon, this without going to trouble of making a tent. It could even start dripping out little by little! Any fire hazard with covering the thing near a heater?

Len, thank you for your thoughts. I too hope it isn't cracked anywhere. I got it on Wednesday and it got cold right away. Luckily it didn't freeze before we got it moved into the barn. It came from Long Island. I don't think there's much of a fire hazard since the salamander can go right under the rear end and the tractor will keep the tarp at least a couple of feet away, but I don't know. I'll try it first without and see if that does it.

I had a couple Wards tires on an H and they lasted forever. I don't know what they were made of but they wore like iron.
I think the Wards Riverside tire looks cool. I would try to find one to match it. You would have an interesting set of tires on your H.

I had ice in a H rearend one time and I used charcoal in a pan under the rearend and when it thawed out I ended up draining out 4 gal. of water before the thick black oil came so I just put 4 gal. fuel oil in and ran it for 5 more years before I sold it. Bob

I'm curious about the yellow paint which is poking its head out from under the red. Do you know the history on this tractor? Was it owned by a state hwy dept or other maintainence agency? Not something you see every day.

I don't know. The previous owner got it with a SH as a package deal, and didn't want it. The paint is pretty ugly, and maybe someday I'll fix it.
