Wide Front M

From what I've heard the IH WF had the tie rods in front and the aftermarket like Schwartz they were behind. I don't know that that makes it incorrect, necessarily, but doubtless those who are better informed will tell you whether that's how it was.

Early w.f.s had the tie rod in backbut, latter ones were in front. The way easyest to tell is if the part under the bolster is a casting its a IH, if fabricated (welded plates) its after market. You can check the photos for examples.

The IH wfes with the tie rods in the rear didn't come out until IH was into the production of the Super Ms.

IMO, the Schwarts wfe turns tighter than the IH wfes, especially the ones with the tie rods in front.

Andy: I believe you may have that backwards. The "M" style had the rods in front; the Super M style had them in back. This is for IH wfe's. Aftermarket brands generally had them in back.

My '53 SMD has the same front end as glennster's M
This is a pretty unmolested tractor that recently came from the original owner. I would imagine the front ends were one of those rolling/shifting changeover things, use 'em until they're gone

I believe that both of those pictures are of the Farmall, original wide front axle. The second picture has the axle installed in the optional "reversed" position. Neither picture is of a Schwartz.
