Counter Weights

Morning All,
I was advised to construct some type of counter weight for the rear of my IH 454.
We will use it to move small round bales .
What do you all use as a weight and how best to construct a good easy to remove but will still do the job.
Thanks
Harry

I always just left the hang on scraper on. If you need more weight you can hang tractor weights or something on the scraper.

All kinds of things to use. A heavy implement on the back will do it. If you want to keep it more compact, you can make a plain old weight. I've seen some that were just grease drums (or even the bigger 55 gal variety cut down a little) with rods driven through them for the 3-pt arms and something rigged for the top link, then filled with scrap iron, sand, cement, whatever's heavy. My neighbor made his on the same principle -- built a form, about 2'x2'x3'high, centered the bar crossways through and extending out enough on each side the form. Filled it with scrap ron and moncrete, and set two loops (with a dead-man cross-piece on the bottom) that he'd made from some heavy scrap steel plate for his top link. Don't know what it actually weighs, but it's quite fatherly and does the job.

ow about 2 rolls at a time....one on front & one on rear?

I move 200lbs bales all the time and use a back blade with suit case weights on the blade. That way I have something on back I can use plus be able to move the bales. I have 6 of them on right now at 85lbs each and if I ever find some more I will be adding them

I used some Farmall 140lb disc weights and used a piece of threaded rod to hold them toghether. I then ran the 3 point draw bar hitch though the middle. Makes it very easy to back up to and hook up.

Buy a scrap 12foot 2 gang disk. Disassemble and put all the blades together into a cylinder with the two middle blades cupped in opposite directions (round ends on both ends. Use two of the bearings to allow it to roll, and the frame cut up to make a mount with the rolling axle about 4' to the rear of the 3pt hitch. Also make a seperate hitch on it to use it as a roller as needed. JimN

Thaks Guys
Ill dig around to see what I can find,
Stepfather was into junkin should of kept
some of the heavier metals around.
Thanks
Harry
