how can you tell a difference between m and 450 cam. i may have one and i"m curious in which one it is. and can you tell me which one is better and the difference in the cams. thank you

Cams with right and left hand cam nut threads were used in a C281. More than one IH part number could be found on some cams, even though its the same use. If you can find a number ending with DA or DB its a cam like used in a 450. DB has left hand threads for the gear retaining nut, the rest have right hand threads. If its a aftermarket or a regrind the only way to tell is checking the lobes, unless they stamped there numbers on the cam.
Valve timming was changed to gain a little more power over cams with the part # ending with the letter D. Don't know if its just me, but seems like the early cam uses less fuel.

If you are looking for particulars like LSA, durations @ .050 lift, and lift with X ratio rocker you will need to research to see if you have somebody local with whats called a cam doctor. If you know it's a factory cam with part #'s somebody on here I'm sure have the #'s unless it's been reground.

In case you don't know if the cams are for a M through 450 size engine. Only 2 numbers I know of found on the IH cams are 48196 and 45955. They started out with a D suffix in M tractors and ended with a DB suffix in a 450. 48196DA and 45955DA was used in 400 and 450 tractors before they switched to 48196DB and 45955DB during 450 production. The numbers are hard to read on some of those cams. With the new stuff out now someone probably has a simpler way of checking cams. I haven't checked one for ages and used a degree wheel and a dial indicator.

just by looking a cam from an m has one key way and a 450 cam has 2 key ways-- if you run a live pump i always use a 450 cam --and use locktight when putting on the timing gear--under the gear and the nut!! good luck!!

well i have the 45955D but the last letter looks like a C. Is that a possible part number. Cause i know you said they were hard to read but i'm almost positive thats what it is.thanks for all of ya'lls time to answer my question.
