Got to thinking! It's a long shot but---- Is it possible that water could be froze in your steering gear box?????? The gearbox is under the radiator. Take the grill off and you will see a small pipe plug. That is where you add gear oil. I&T manual should tell where drain plug is.I wonder has anyone ever had that gear box freeze?

I was going to reply to that the other day, however I never did see a 4 or 560 freeze up but I have seen a hydrostatic steering like on 656 etc get enough moisture build in bolster to freeze them solid. I think the 460 used the steel rings on piston so have a slight amount of leakage past piston into center of bolster and therefore getting a little more exchange of fluid than the later model tractors with the teflon seals. It is also one of them cavities that you can never drain when changing fluid to get out all the moisture.

Ok, next week if I get some wrench time in I'll check that out on the 460. I spoke to a friend of mine tonight who works for my local CIH dealer as a technichian. He wondered the same thing that you did and told me that I may even have a scored piston in the hyd assist that could be locked up. I cant hardly wait to get the ol girl in the shop so I can get this all sorted out. Hopefully my steering is salvageable. My friend was telling me finding a junk 460 with a good stering unit is difficut and pricy! Not what I wanted to hear but I'm looking forard to the challenge of restoring this old tractor. I got a fairly good deal on it, saving it from the junkyard for only $500!!! Thank you again very much for your help/suggestions! If I dont speak to you guys again before hand, have a Merry Christmas and I'll talk to you guys later!

If worse comes to worse I have seen information on this site about a after-market kit to convert tractors with wide fronts to orbitor(sp?) power steering same as is on combines and newer tractor. I know of some people taking parts from combines and making their own changeover kits and having good luck. I would like keep in touch with you. My e-mail is [email protected]. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!! Armand
