w9 camshaft change

You will need to remove the rocker arms. You shouldn't need to remove the head. You will need to remove the grille, radiator and probably the damper pulley. You will need to remove the oil pan & pump. Here's the procedure from my manual. You should get one of these manuals they have a lot of useful info in them. I bought this in 1975. Hal

What is the name of that manual? Does it have all the models in it? Where would be a good place to look for one? I have been looking for a good engine repair manual for my tractors - cub, 100, and super c. My wife tells me that I sure ask a lot of questions. Thanks, Royce

I did the very same job over a year ago. Pull the radiator, valve cover, pushrods, lifters, oil pan and pump. Unscrew the big nut on the pulley and tap it off from behind (tap as close to the crank as possible). Jack the engine up a tiny bit to remove the front mount and remove the front cover. Unbolt the front camshaft retainer thru the gear and carefully slide the camshaft and gear assembly out.

What is wrong with your camshaft? I suspect mine was slightly bent, creating a terrible knocking noise at valve #3.

You can get I&T shop manuals at Tractor Supply, on Ebay, Amazon, or any number of online or local book sellers.

Unfortunately the newer I&T manuals are abridged, meaning they took a lot of information out that they considered "unimportant" to save on printing costs. The brown covered version pictured above is the original version, and is much better.

"Much better" is relative with an I&T manual. If you're not mechanically inclined, the I&T manual will be USELESS to you whether it's an old brown cover or a new gray cover version. Most of the manual is "removal will be obvious" or simply "remove the XXX." There is no step-by-step.
