Replacing a Clutch in a M and need HELP

I was told that you don"t half to split a Farmall M to replace the clutch, so I took out the Belly pump and started to take out the shaft that runs through the clutch. But it only slides about 2" until it hits the other side of the shaft.
Can any one here help me or do I half to split the tractor.

It is not necessary to split unless the Flywheel is to be removed. There is high probability that the clutch cover has 3 release holes in it. these are bolt holes that have nothing in them at each lever pivot point. The clutch cover bolts (6) fit these holes. Remove every other cover bolt, and screw them into the open holes. This compresses the springs allowing greater freedom of movement of the shaft. The shaft does certainly come out, holding your mouth just right helps. Take pictures, and put the coupling together the same way it came apart or serious noise will result. JimN

Take everything out. The odd-shaped universal joint needs to be removed -- note how it came apart. Then take the 6 outermost bolts out of the clutch pressure plate and wiggle the pieces out.

Jim's got you covered. This site has a potty filter, and Jim's suggestion that holding your mouth just right is only a cleverly-veiled reference to the effectiveness of verbal lubrication. I actually undertook the same project once for a preacher who wasn't physically able to get under the tractor to do the job himself, and he was sittin' right there helpin' me swear. It's challenging but entirely do-able.

Yup, if you get the two shafts in the exact right position and mutter at them with the right combination of 4-letter words, they will just barely slip by each other.

I've done this job and could not get the clutch out untill I removed the clutch release fork and the cross shaft that work the fork that moves the throwout bearing. You have to remove the clutch release sleeve (I think that is what it's called)bolts that hold the sleeve to the top of the housing. The cross shaft is held in place by the clutch fork. There are two bolts and two thick washers that act as keys to hold the fork to the shaft. Remove the bolts and the thick key washers plus all the external attachments to the cross shaft and the cross shaft will slide out. When you have all that out, compress the clutch springs like the others said by putting the three bolts in the clutch plate. Now you can tilt the drive shaft and it will come out. As I recall, I got mine out with out taking out the cross shaft, but could not work it around to get it back in until I removed the cross shaft. I have complete instructions that I wrote up some where in my archives. If you want a copy, send me an E mail and I will dig up the document.

I take the clutch assembly all out at once, shaft, release bearing with carrier, the works, just be sure to cap pressure plate like posters have said. After you get it all unbolted, you can tip the clutch and pull shaft if you like. Worst part of job is cleaning up that housing so you won't get any crud on the new cluch linings when you put it back in.

Also you should slide your old disk towards the rear of the tractor on the shaft, this will let you get the unit out.If not the tip of the shaft stays in the disk and you cant angle it enough to get it out.I think I also used many 4 lettered words too,I went as far as to try and bench press the M...but no luck

Thanks for all of your help, I got the clutch out and I went to put in the the new clutch and some how I must of gotten the wrong one because it doesn't fit. So now I got to get another one and get her put in.
Thanks again every one.

I would like a copy of the instructions if you would please. My email address is in my profile.

Don't think I can get to your profile, so you will have to open your E mail in the post, or send me an E mail.
