I have a 1950 Farmall M that im thinking about putting a wide front end on. And i am thinking about putting dual rear tires on aswell. what do yall think of that. Ive hear people talk about doing it but has anyone done it or have pictures of an M with Dual rear tires. I dont have it done yet. I just bought a wide front end and a pair of hubs and rims for the back now all i need is a couple tires. let me know what you all think
Thank You
Jeff

Duals on an M are fine. They can and will allow it to be driven on softer ground than with singles.
If it is a stock M used for farm applications, duals can increase the traction, but caution is needed. Like anything it has limits. Dualing an M and using first gear pulling as hard as it can stand with a field cultivator or 12foot disk, can break the rear end. The slippage with stock tires makes that very hard to do, and it is a real issue. If flotation, and reduces imprinting with normal M loads. Do it they look cool. JimN

do you have a picture of an M with duals? I have a 10ft disk and i dont pull it hard. it will pull it in 3rd gear great.

That does look awesome all i need now is to tubes and a 13.6 tire i have 1 i need another 1. but im using a rim and hub like the inner tire on those pictures.

Do it right if you are going to do it. Four new tires! It would look sweet but imagine the bill!!!
I had all the stuff to do it to my MD, but I dismounted the tires to blast and paint the rims and sold the tires in the mean time! No worries, I sold them for $50 more than I paid for the rims, tires, and centers :) They were NOT pretty tires either.

Yeah, That would be SWEET but like you said the bill would be HUGE! but im going to use a cast hub like the came out with i couldnt find any original outer dual rims and hubs. i need 1 more tire. you are lucky you sold them for more. if i was to sell my M after i get the tires and wide front end and painted up how much should i ask for it?

Jeff, If you are going to use the factory cast wheels and rims the inside set will need to be cupped In and the outside will have to be cupped Out to work on the standard length axles that most Ms have. If by some outside chance your tractor has the long axles then both can be cupped Out!
Hope this helps.

jeff, check out any farm consignment auctions for duals for your m. they can be had around me for 50-150 dollars for a set complete. i picked up two sets of duals for an m last year, one set of clamp on duals and one set of the peterson bolt on duals. decent tires on both sets. the petersons went for 25 dollars, odd no one would bid on em (but me) i have a third set of clamp ons in the barn , but the spacer rings sprouted legs and walked off.

Jeff,

If you want duals for more flotation, duals are fine on a M. If you are wanting them for more traction, I would not do it, as you will eventually either break an axle or tear up something in the rear end. IMHO.

If you're still looking for images, there were a few youtube videos posted several months back of an M or Super M with duals. You'll have to search on Farmall, because as I recall the word "duals" was not mentioned in the video, or was misspelled.

We had a '54 SM that we ran duls on from the time it was new. For years it was the only tractor in the area that had duals on it, probably till the early '60s. They didn't make an actual dual back then so we bought a 2nd set of cast wheels, rims & tires. The inner wheels were put on with the concave dished out & the dual with it in. Made for a tight squeeze on the operator's platform but it worked.

We used the SM for cultivating as well so when we removed the duals we would remove the inner wheels as well, reverse them so the concave was out & put them back on.. Did the same when we pulled the dual on the furrow side off for plowing. Seems like a lot of work now but it was the way it was & we didn't think much of it. I remember we had a small flat tool that had several rollers on it that we would insert into the keway on the axle when the tractor was jacked up the weight of the wheel was on the tool which made it easier to roll the wheel off. Though it always didn't work as it was suppose to.

Today there are several different options fpr dualing an M or SM.

We never had axle or rearend problems with the SM. Tractor had 4 1/8" Firecrater pistons so had plenty of power for a SM. We pulled 3x14 plow with it 10" deep in heavy black soils sometimes had to shift to 1st gear in tough spots. Pulled a 9' disc, a 12' field cultivator, or a 10' cultimulcher.

i have clamp on duals that i put on my super m for discing and i put one on for plowing. it looks pretty cool and works really well.

Hi all and MERRY CHRISTMAS. I haven't been on here in awhile but read it every day, love it. Back in the 40's I was a young boy, my uncle had an H on rubber and he would dual it with steel on the out side and take the front wheels of and turn them around to keep them from balling up in the black gumbo mud and would pull a Martin ditcher to drain the fields in the early spring. It was the only one I ever seen. Enjoy reading after you guys, I have a 53 SC original paint( whats left of it) JN in TN

Brused hip bones, torn door jambs, creased fenders and missing fence posts are the most common telling definitions. Look at pictures of Ms and 99.8% will have the standard axle. So if yours look the same they are standard. JimN

I used a set of 9-bolt hubs off of a Massey-Harris 44 (2 3/4" axle) and put pressed steel dual rims on my 400. sorry no pics now

Joe,
Couldn't the tractor handle running the tires backwards when cultivating? I would just guess it wouldn't take that much traction, but not positive. I am of the lazy generation so I will cut a corner wherever I can :D

I have a 52 Farmall M I am rebuilding...to run on E-85...would like to ask you some questions...are you willing to take some? thanks for your response...shipley
