Farmall H Wont Stay Running

I have a H that will not run longer than a few seconds. I took the carb apart to replace the float. Put new gaskets in carb while off. Since then it will not run long at all. Removed the drain plug a bottom of carb and does get a steady flow for lengthy amount of time. It also had an inline filter for the fuel which I removed and put a fuel bowl on instead. What could be the problem?

first figure out if its a fuel problem or a spark problem. get a spray can of carburetor cleaner and remove the air intake hose off the carb. with carb cleaner handy, start the tractor, as soon as it starts to die, spray some carb cleaner in the carb and see if it stays running. if it does, there is a fuel system problem. if it doesnt help, start looking at the ignition.

I like Glenster's answer. If it 12v with a resistor in the coil circuit, the resistor can be broken and only work when it is dead cold, then it heats, pulls apart and the engine stops. Other wiring, and the ignition switch can do that as well.
Even Mags can stop after a few seconds. JimN

Did you leave a rag in the intake? Check the air cleaner cup if it is cold [below freezing] for water frozen in the bottom. Sounds like our A one winter--would start up for 2 seconds then die--ice in the cup. Otherwise, a plugged intake somewhere.

Hold you hand over the throat of the carburetor and see if there's good suction while a helper starts the tractor. If it doesn't have much suction you probably have an intake manifold leak. One other thing when it quits running check for fire to your plugs asap before anything cools. If there's no fire it could the ballast resistor or coil. Hal

Once in a while a new float and new gasket will interfere with each other. Check the new gasket and trim it, if needed, so the inner lip doesn't stick out inside the bowl (in the direction of the float). And, of course, make sure the float doesn't contact the sides of the bowl.

My H just started doing something similar - I found some junk got into the outlet in the tank. I was able to blow it out from the bottom with an air hose.

I've also heard you can have flow problems if the vent in your gas cap gets plugged up.

Loosen or remove the gas cap and try starting it. I found that with a full tank and the air vent in the gas cap plugged, that my tractor would only run a short time. A new gas cap solved the problem.
