not running

hi i have a farmall super a that i was running one dey and all of the sudden it started pulling real hard and died.now when you try to start it it sounds like its out of time could it be something in the governrs or not?

Have you tried to see if its in time yet. The gov has teeth on the drive and you could have stripped and jumped a tooth or so but it just dont sound like thats the peoblem. Check to make sure when #1 is on compression the rotor is lined you with the tower thats the only way you will know if it jumped time without tearing engine down. You can see the piston with a good lite when it is at the top of compression stroke then check the rotor.

Could be a lot of things. The timing is worth checking as gene describes, but I agree that that's likely not going to be the problem.

If you have a battery ignition (not a magneto) a bad coil would rank high on the list of suspects.

Pull No1 sparkplug near the radiator and bring that piston to TDC on the compression stroke as Gene suggested. Hold your thumb over the plug hole while someone else hand cranks the engine until you feel compression against your thumb. Then drop a LARGE handle screwdriver on top of the piston and watch it rise as someone slowly cranks the engine by hand. When it quits rising you should be at TDC. Then see where the rotor is pointing. If it's not at the No1 plug tower something has jump time. It could be a sheared key on the drive gear on the distributor or a Mag. Could be a timing gear. Hal

My old A done the same thing when I was in a parade with it, it bogged down making a slight popping sound and then shut off. It would pop out the exhaust really loud when I tried to start it after that. When I tore it down, I found the the governor gear and the cam gear both had a couple teeth missing and it had jumped time. It was a lot of fun to fix. I have picture somewhere. Yours might be something different, but you will have to check timing first to rule it out. My grandpa told me a long time ago that the distributor shaft in the Super A went bad and it also acted similarly so it could be a number of things.
