Slow moving bucket loader

My F20 with bucket loader works fine, but is slow as molasses in 20 degree weather we've having right now. Pump has R and O Napa fluid in it which is pretty thin stuff. Would a bigger hydraulic hose help? I think the pipes on the liftall pump are 1/2 inch. The hose I have on it is also 1/2 inch. So could I speed the bucket up by putting on a bigger hose? As always, suggestions appreciated.

I doubt larger hose will help. If you have quick couplers in hose I would eliminate them, most likely though, you say lift all pump, I assume like M and H use. The check ball on them will mash the ball stop from cold oil and only allow small amount of cold oil through. If no ball stop they will often shut off oil completely in cold. Could try a different outlet if possible.

My much newer Ford with loader does the same thing. That fluid in the hoses and cylinders gets real cold and it just takes more for the pump to move it. I have found that once the tractor warms if I extend and retract all the cylinders multiple time that it starts to move faster...kinda gets the juices flowin.

Not much you can do, unless you have a way to heat the oil before you wanna use the tractor and loader. Its just the nature of cold, it increases the oil's viscosity (resistance to flow). Thats why some tractors, like the 40+60 series etc when you start them in the cold the PTO automatically engages, so it can help circulate the oil in the transmission.

It is definitely the nature of the beast.

Cold hydraulic systems will run slow until the oil warms up. Depending on the system that could take a while, from several minutes to an hour.

One way to warm the oil up quick is to raise the bucket all the way and force the oil to go through the relief valve. I didn't say it was SMART, just quick. This is not a good idea as you are then stressing the rest of your 70-year-old hydraulic system in cold weather. Something could go "pop" on you, and it's no fun fixing hydraulics in the middle of the driveway in the middle of a snowstorm.

Thanks for all of the responses. Guess I'll just live with it. Bucket actually goes up OK, slow going down, but of course it's only a 1 way system.Works great in the summer, which is only about 7 months away.

Is there such a thing as synthetic hydraulic oil? That might help.

I know for certain synthetic ATF is available. I use it in my Dodge 1-ton and like it. It should work fine in your hydraulic system.
