450 tachometer

Tach wasn't working on this Farmall 450 I just bought. Took the cable loose at the tach, and tach turns freely and needle moves. Cable looks good. Took the drive mechanism out at the distributor and with the gear out and hooked up to the cable, I can turn the gear and the tach needle moves. So wondering why it doesn't work when gear is in place to the distributor? Does the plastic gear get worn and needs replaced? Any ideas? Thanks!!

The centerline of the gear housing ID is not concentric with the OD of the housing. This allows for gear mesh adjustment. You will notice that the aluminum (or pot metal housing) has scallops. The housing should be rotated until the gear lash is minimal. When you like the fit, install the two screws to secure the housing.

It has been awhile since I have done this but I think the info is basically correct. Earlier tach drives did not have the adjusting feature. It is also possible that the gear and shaft are so worn that proper mesh cannot be achieved or the gear is stripped.

Okay, this makes sense to me now. I wondered why the pot metal housing has the scallops. I will try that tomorrow, and if the gear doesn't mesh, assume I need a new gear/shaft assembly. Looking at the CaseIH parts book, it looks like they are available. Thanks for your help.

I was able to find a new plastic gear for a 400 but no where could I come up with the pot metal housing . Actually, it was the earlier ones that had the scallops on for adjusting gear mesh, later did not. The new gear still lays on customers bench (some where). Tried several salvage yards and dealer. Usually the square on end of cable wears and the matching internal part on drive gear also. Have pinched a few down over the years and got by.

You will be lucky if the old gear is good. If you have the slotted gear housing, I'm pretty sure you can't get a replacement gear for it. IH came out with a new gear retainer, housing and gear to replace those with. Think the only thing you can get now is the gear for the new type housing and it doesn't fit the old type housing. Although I did modify one to work before. Package 369694R91 replaced 364829R91 and contained the new type housing, retainer and gear. New gear was 369695R91, housing 369692R1 and gear retainer 369693R1. Think the gear may be all you can get now. New type housing has the gear drive hole centered and smooth on the outside. New gear has a metal cover on the shaft, instead of the all plastic shaft on other types. Late 450 tractors used the new type.

Need to back up, Messicks does show the housing and gear retainer, also the tach drive gear for the numbers I posted and a price. If they have them you need deep pockets.
