M overhaul---advanced questions

I"m thinking about overhauling my Farmall M this winter. The last time it was done was back in 1984. I use it to farm 160 acres so it has had some real hours on it since that time, and it"s starting to use oil.

I know all about replacing the sleeves, pistons, rings, bearings, valves etc. But wanted to know if I should do some other things. This is the third time this tractor will be overhauled, and as I mentioned she is still a working girl and does some heavy crop tillage (mostly tandem disking in the spring and also planting).

For example: should I get the connecting rods and/or crankshaft or block magnifluxed? Should the connecting rod bushings be replaced? This will be the third time the head and block mating surfaces will be smoothed-down. Is there a limit to how many times you can do this? Are there any other things I should do over and above the standard overhaul? Thanks for any advice and it is appreciated!

i would deff do the wrist pin bushings they need to be remened out to fit the pin. as for the crank you can check them in place with a micrometer but if it have never been turned down before it will most likly need to be done. the head i would say is up to you. if its not leaking coolant then you dont have to but if it was me and i had it all apart then why not its not very expensive to have it done. also dont forget cam bearings as well they may need to be replaced too.

HEY THERE . IT'S NICE TO SEE SOMEONE USING A M FOR WHAT IT WAS INTENDED FOR. I MY SELF HAVE A 42 M AND THINKING ABOUT REBUILDING IT. USE IT MOSTLY FOR DEAD WEIGHT PULLING AND PLOW DAYS. I'VE TALKED TO SOME VERY SMART GUYS IN FARMALL'S THIS IS WHAT THEY TOLD ME. CLEAN THE HEAD UP DECK IT BUT DON'T MILL .100 OFF. NOT GOING TO GAIN MUCH IN POWER BUT MAKE'S HEAD WEAK AND PRONE TO CRACKING. ALSO PUT 450 RODS IN.SAME ROD BUT CONSIDERABLY LIGHTER. I WOULD GET A DIAL INDICATER AND CHECK THE SLEEVE PROTRUSION,SLEEVE ACCUALLY MAKES THE SEAL FOR COMPRESSION. IF THAT'S GOOD. REBUILD IT AND PLOW FOR ANOTHER 5-10 YRS. JUST A THOUGHT JUST HAVE YOUR HEAD CHECKED MAYBE JUST SOME BAD GUIDES & SEATS? HECK OF A LOT CHEAPER.

(quoted from post at 18:39:44 12/10/09) This will be the third time the head and block mating surfaces will be smoothed-down.

Most of the time the block deck does not need to be surfaced. Surfaceing the block is a rather big job, naturally all the studs need to be removed (not an easy task) and after the deck has been surfaced the sleeve counter bore will have to be bored deeper to maintain the correct sleeve protrusion above the block.

I would not be worried about surfaceing the head for the third time unless it has previously been shaved down to gain more compression. Surfaceing usually removes a few thousandths of an inch, depending on how bad the head is warped.

Most overhaul kits come with connecting rod bushings, get your shop to install the new bushings and then ream/hone them to the correct size.

To use the 450 rods,
You would have to find a set of pistons from a 400 C-264, with a 4 inch bore, and uses the small diameter wrist pin.

You wont find a 4 inch bore M-SM with a small pin in any overhaul.

Unless it was for the 400 with a 4 inch bore and small pin. If something like that exists for the 400, then thats a good option. Only other way is to bore the block, install 450 sleeves and got to the 281ci.

Chads, Most overbore sleeve and piston sets IH sold at one time for M tractors used the small piston pin. Connecting rod adapter packages were used in the small end of rod. Think IH still sells a few sets if someone wants to pay the price. M tractors are still around with those small pin sets in them.

Probably 1956, for sure in 57. Most of the non fire crater overbore IH piston and sleeve sets with small pins started with 6 digit part numbers 366 or 367.

can a 1952 M be bored out to the specs for a 450?
I am interested in restoring an M...but I want it to work for a living...pulling disc, field cultivator, etd. Can it be made to put out 70 hp?
any help would be appreciated...and I want to run it on E-85....as a demonstration...shipley
