Super A - Engine Type

Anyone know how to identify what type of engine is on my Super A. I"ve read they came with either a 113c or 123c. I"m not sure how to determine which?

It was only the last of the SuperAs that were built with 123s, as IH transitioned to the short run of the SuperA-1 before converting to the 100.

Those that were built as 113s can be overhauled to 123s (and a lot of them have been) by switching to 3-1/8" sleeves (the 113s were 3").

I'm not sure what search parameters will work best to narrow it down, and you may still have to wade through a lot, but you might try the archives here. Hugh McKay posted several times a pretty detailed breakdown of serial numbers, and the different part numbers assigned to blocks, that were 113s that can be sleeved out to 123, and another series that were built to take a sleeve with a larger O.D that started as 3-1/8" 123s but can be sleeved out to 3-1/4" to make a 131 of them.

Thanks for the info. A quick follow-up question that gets at the heart of my "dilema". I now can assume I have a 113c because I know the tractor is a 1948 and has the original engine best I can tell from serial #'s.

The tractor's carb went recently and I'm searching for a replacement. If I look for a replacement based on the 113c engine I come up with one carb.(zenith 14007) If I search for a replacement based on the serial number from my existing carb.(an old Zenith) I come up with a totally different carb.(and not any of the standard new replacements common out there)

I've called about 10 different carb shops/companies and it seems everyone has a different response. The carb I have and the fact that the tractor had the adjustable radiator cover would suggest that it was one able to run on distillate. I'm not sure if this changes anything or not?! Seems like a simple enough issue but man I've been going around in circles for a few days now! Any thoughts much appreciated!!
 
I run a 14007 on both my SuperC (sleeved out to 131) and my BN (same, to 123), and they both do just fine.

I'd suggest that one over a carb you might find for a distillate motor. I have one of the latter sitting on the shelf (Zenith #12522, can't remember if it was sold as a distillate or a "universal" carb) and fit was a problem on the SuperC. The other reason I'd suggest it is that you really don't need the main jet screw running gas -- the idle mixture adjustment is sufficient.

As far as your radiator shutters. Your tractor may have originally been a distillate, in which case the shutters were pretty much standard on delivery. Still, your manifold and carb may have been changed out. The big clues there might be having the second/starting tank for gas, and also the part number on your head. My Super C has the original gas motor, but also has the shutters. The original owner was up in the Catskills and wanted them for operating in the cold weather. Even running on gas, those motors are cold-natured and take quite a while to heat up. I don't like shutting down a motor before it's had a chance to warm up (mine sits a lot and I like the idea of evaporating out any condensed water out of the oil), so I'll close the shutters at startup and open them after it's warmed up good.

Short answer, the 14007 will work just fine.
 
Shutters came on lots of tractors that were gas engines just because it has shutters doesent mean a dist engine.
 
Scotty, I have a super A engine in my regular A and it has a Carter carb. I also think that it is the original carb. Am I wrong?? Henry
 
Could well be and likely is original, Henry. If you have them, you can flip around through either the I&T manual or the parts catalog, and see that IH at different times, used Zeniths, Carters, and Marvel-Scheblers interchangeably.

My SuperC originally had a Carter. It's still sitting, boxed up after a good soaking and cleanup, waiting for me to find the COMPLETE rebuild kit it needs. Until I find one, the 14007 is doing all I could ask of it.
