U2 Power Unit

I recently acquired an IH U2 power unit. It has the Farmall A engine. I have looked everywhere I can think of trying to find info on the serial numbers which will tell the age and other things about the unit. I've can't find serial number info anywhere. I wonder if anyone on here knows a source for serial no info on power units or has the info and can help. The engine serial number is UAA 6979G. The serial no. tag gives the model as U2 and the serial number as 6926Z29A. I figured these would have engine serial numbers in the tractors serial sequence, but evidently, the power units have separate serial numbers. Thanks for any help.

On mine, the unit serial tag is on the left hand side of the clutch housing. Mine is direct drive, does not have a gear reduction. The engine serial is the same place as on the tractors. Right hand front above the mag. On mine, I had to take loose the speed control rod that goes to the governor to read it.

Jim,

Thanks!

Is there an explanation some place for the letter codes? What is the G suffix on the engine serial? What is the Z29A suffix on the unit serial??

The first place I'd look for thoses codes is the Parts Catalog. But since I don't have one, I can't look. I would expect them to indicate options, which on power units could be a long list, including type of clutch, gear box, drive pulleys etc.

The "G" on the engine number may indicate a gasoline engine.

How's it mounted, as far as a skid or otherwise?

I don't really have any references at hand specific to the U2, but G as a motor suffix in one list I have indicates a motor for a cotton picker. A homemade appearance to the base it's on might suggest it came off one of them????

I think the G cotton picker suffix is for a cotton picker tractor attachment and would be on a tractor serial number. This G is on an engine number, not the unit's serial number. I have seen the G suffix on A/B tractor engines when the tractor had no particularly noteworthy features. I have a B with it on the original engine. I suspect in the case of the A/B and this engine it indicates a gasoline engine.

By the way, in 1944, the only cotton pickers were experimental. I don't think a U-2 was ever used on a cotton picker (although they did put some low drum units on the Super C).

It has the normal 4 feet with holes for mounting with 5/8 inch bolts that most all these power units have. There was no other mounting (skid, etc). I think Jim Becker is correct that the G indicates that it is a gasoline engine. It has a 5 1/2 inch diameter 6 goove Vee belt pulley on the output shaft and is direct drive which means the pulley turns at engine speed. I guess I'm going to have to find a parts catalog to determine what the serial number suffix means.
