Iam looking at a 450 gas..Is this a fairly popular tractor in the IH line up? Let me know some pros and cons, and what options would make it a sought after tractor...appreciate your opinions.

We had one back in the day. At first we had a ot of problems with it. Had the engine overhauled twice & the rearend once. The last time it was worked on they used a lot of parts from the 560 rearend updates & 560 engine parts where adaptible. After that we never had any problems with it. We ran it until 1971 when I traded it in on a 806D.

Later on ('67) we bought a new 656 gas. The old 450 would pull rings around the 656.

Back in '64 when I was in the AF, I worked part time on a ranch on the WY/SD border. We had a 450 gas and I thought it ran great... never had any trouble with it while I was there. Pulled a 5x14" pull plow in wheat stubble and a 3x16" F-H plow for the corn ground where we plowed deeper. Pulled a baler all summer on 400 acres of alfalfa and a chopper for the corn to fill a trench silo in the fall. It was the primary tractor on the ranch and never a glitch.
