Update on the A with antifreeze in oil

Last night we lowered to water level below the head and this afternoon we pulled the oil plug and drained a full coffee mug full of antifreeze from the oil pan. From what I understand this means it is not a head gasket problem right? How much do we have to tear down if it is the sleeve seals? Should it be rebuilt at that time? I know I ran it at least 8 hours before I cought the problem are the bearings toast? Is the old tractor worth the $3000.00 + I will have in it? I am lost and farmallhfan is telling me lets tear down.

I would pull the pan off and see were the anitfreeze is comming from, you should see it right away then go from there, good luck

The coolant in the oil is a problem, but it does not mean that the engine is "toast". If it still runs good, you have most likely caught the problem early enough that you will be OK. You just need to find the problem and fix it.

To get to the seals you need to pull the oil pan,
cylinder head, connecting rods w/ pistons & the sleeves. If it was my tractor I would install a new sleeve kit while you have the engine apart. You go to all that work and your engine may smoke and not have any power. Hal

Don't be afraid of this motor work. As you disassemble things, put the bolts in many well marked clear baggies. And even keep a log of what you did first, second, etc. This really helps when reassembling.

We'll help you every step of the way.

In this case, drain the oil, and remove the oil pan (a ten minute job) and get a good look up there. Don't wipe things down yet, just look and watch for a weep. Then report back.

i recently rebuilt my 1086 using all the great advice from this web site, i had never re-built a engine before, it runs great. it sounds like your sleeves are bad and you need to to put a re-build kit in.

I second this. My Super A had a similar leak. After dropping the oil pan I could see drips from the bottom end of one of the sleeves. After tear down it appeared that all the sleeves were corroded badly were the O-ring sits and just above that. Sleeves had to be replaced :-(

You can have new sleeves and pistons for around 300 getting the crank ground with new bearings for around 200 if the valves need grinding could run some but for less than 1000 new engine that will last forever. Or just remove and replace the o-rings and with new gaskets put back together and use. Your tractor to do as you wish. Just giving some costs

Thanks guys, we will tear the tractor down after the 1st of the year. I am going to fix it right thenI know what I have. Also farmallhfan thinks if I change the front bearing in the transmission it will ride a little quiter. Plus my son wants the tractor when I am through with it.
