Hand start on Farmall H

Hello my farmall H is in good shape and i would like to get the hand crank to work.I have the hand crank and it slides onto the shaft. The shaft moves just a little bit in both direction.I cant seem to push it in to engage the engine.I noticed that the spring doesnt move at all.The shaft where i put the handle on will move in about 1/4 of an inch than stop like something might be rusted up. any ideas??? just would like to get it to work.. thanks

if the tractor still has the mud shield on the bottom of the bolster, remove it and see if the starter crank unit is packed with field dirt. you may need to dig all that out, then use compressed air to blow all the debris out. then give it a real good soaking with your favorite penetrating oil, keep working the crank in and out , it will eventually clean up.

As glenster said thats about all you can do. My H took me 2 weeks and several cans of BP Blaster to get it free, then it kicked the crap out of me. I put the crank on the floor pan and never tryed that again.

They said that you should always pull up on the crank handle ONLY (Never Push Down)when you are trying to start the engine. Makes sense if it were to kick back it would than pop out of your hand. my farmall H engine has the pertronics iginition system and is timed with a strobe light so i dont think that would be an issue.I would like to try it and see.I have watched people do it and YouTube has the way it should be done. john

I have a crank for my H. It will start in one click of the mag if it is warm, just a short quick pull up is all it takes.

If it is stone cold in the morning, you better eat your Wheaties before you try to crank it.

I.M.O the ONLY reason to use a hand crank would be during an overhaul or to adjust valves. As for starting that is what the electric starter is for. I never intend to ever use a hand crank for starting!!!!! Don't know about an H but if an M has upgrades to the engine it will have too much compression to hand crank. Armand

One small thing you forgot to mention on hand cranking. KEEP YOUR THUMB ON THE BACK SIDE OF CRANK HANDLE along with your fingers.
