Coil question

Is there any way to test a coil to see if it is 6 volt or 12 volt? I can't find any markings on it to say. Thanks!!

Use an accurate VOM or DVM and measure resistance between the two coil primary terminals.

A 12 volt coil will read around 3.0 - 3.5 ohms.

And a 6 volt coil's resistance will be half of that (1.5 to 1.75 ohms)

Thank you, it reads 1.5 ohms, so it is a 6 volt coil. Now that brings up another question - is there a way to be sure that I have a 6 volt regulator, anyway to test that? Thanks again.

There is a part# and sometimes on the bottom it will say how many volts and which ground. So take it off and check get the generator# also you will not have a clue if its been re-did for 12v or still 6v.

es, you can measure it. Need a variable voltage DC power supply. Connect ARM & GND to supply & slowly increase voltage until cut out pulls in (a bit above 6 or abit above 12) and similarily for regulator contacts (~7.7 or 14.4) and looking for those contacts to open rather than close as cut out does.
