Just bought a super M with a 3" horizontal external crack in the block behind the carbuerator. Can this be welded without tearing down the motor? Looks like it has J&B Weld on it now and is seeping some fluid. Can applications like J&B weld hold for long? It looks like this has been on the tractor for a long time.

yes that can be welded in place, prob just have to remove the carb/manifold. jb weld will hold for sometime months to years ? if you are not sure how to weld cast iron have a welder with a portable welder come to your place and have them do it. if your up to the job then look for mg 200 or better yet mg 198. these are rods cast iron, the 198 is designed to work with oil soaked cast iron. make sure that you pre-heat the cast and then post-heat after welding.

epending on the crack I'd be half tempted to leave it alone. If it is in a nonpressurized area of the cooling/oiling system and all it's doing is just weeping alittle oil just check your oil every so often and run it. A pressurized leak is another matter though. My dad's M has a crack in the block running horizontal on the motor on the opposite side you mention and it's been that way for 40 years. Hasn't hurt it yet.

If you weld it I would also recomend drilling a small hole at each end of the crack & insert self-tapping screws. This will prevent the crack from continuing to "run"
